My first attempt at fibre glassing
My First attempt
I made these doors for my MK. My first attempt ever and i'm chuffed at how they turned out given my inexperience.
I've a few questions though
1. i need to improve the finish, would it be better to use some filler (what type do you all prefer) and paint matt black. OR cover in vinyl?
2. the door are very light, they are 2mm thick and a bit bendy, (there is 1mm steel plate where the hinges will go) should i put steel plate bonded to
the back to add stiffness or will the perspex for the window add stiffness?
3. what is the best perspex for making the windows, and where is it best to get it from?
i know a lot of dumb questions, but i thought i would pick your brains

they look alright very thin i think, but look like good to me considering you've not done any before. how many layers of fibreglass is there?
and shat type? looks like tissue?
add some strenghening by laying some nylon rope across the back, and fibreglassing over the top

2mm is probably a bit thin...but adding some strengthening beams will probably work...

there is one layer of 400g matt and one layer of finishing paper. i used about 1.7kg of resin and hardener so all in each door is a bit over 1kg.
i have just found nylon rope in the garage and i have some 1mm steel sheet in there to which i can cut down into strips.
i was going to bolt the perspex on.
i think that i may get a sheet of vinyl and backing foam to try and get a good finish.

The glassed in rope works well, just put a loop about two inches in from the edge all around, used to do that with the wheel openings of the Can-Am
McLaren I worked on as one of the drivers thought he was in Nascar.

i got some polycarb from B&Q, fairly reasonable on price
poly carb doesn't shatter like perspex can, so go with poly carb

Polycarbonate
I would suggest that you want Polycarbonate for your windows - its as tough as they come and they use it for super tough eye protection. However it
is super costly compared to the less tough Acrylic.
I would go for the Polycarbonate but do some research on the net on how to fabricate and polish it.
With my work we sometime order from a company called Robert Horne. They are nationwide and deliver next day. They also offer a free cutting service!
Just google them
