Help!

I was going to have a go at making the bonnet at the weekend. I had made the template and was all fired up to put template to tin and go for it, but...

The aluminium I have is off an old caravan and I have been using it for the sides, rear-end etc. It was free so am trying to keep with the Locost ethos and use as much of it as poss.

Because I am building the McSorley +442, i have an issue, the widest piece I have is about 4" (funny old thing) too short to make the bonnet .

I really don't want to splash out upwards of £50 for a fresh piece (I need about 1500mm x 1000mm).

If anyone has any ideas please feel free to air them here

I did think about extending the nosecone back 4" but I think it will look ridiculous.

Ideas please?

JB

Why not just neatly pop rivet on a 4" strip - to me neatly done line of pop rivets nearly always look slightly "racing".

If the aluminium is free and you don't have anything more to do with it why not try and see what it looks like - anyway will make a conversation piece..

Do you have enough to make 2 halves that can be "hinged" along its length down the centre? They don't have to be hinged, of course, 2 lines of rivets will make it look like that. Could be quite nice.

Id go with that,. As per fozzie mobile but maybe without the hinge.

Ditto to the above, my bonnet is split using a stainless steel piano hinge. Easier to make as well.
Cheers,

has the price gone up that much in the last couple of years?
I paid about £30 for 2.4m x 1.2m sheet

Thanks for all the input guys

I must admit, I was thinking of the 'hinged wings' approach after seeing Fozzie's superb bit of work on here. Only worry is that I can't do the job justice. But as already said, I have enough 'free' ally so it's got to be worth a go

Keep an eye out for progress piccies!
