hoods again - fixing to screen

hi Guys

following on from yesterdays thread. I was very interested in the caravan awning channel.

Just a few questions

1. is the plastic channel strong enough or is the alloy one the better bet?

2. how have people fixed the channel to the screen

i have a very thin surround to the screen and do not think that i will be able to screw fix it to the screen so i am looking for a cleaver clip type fixing.

regards

I wasnt aware of plastic channeling, but the alui one we have on the side of our caravan is VERY robust

Before i added my roof, i did consider an alui channel that went over the top of the screen, but becuse of the rake of the screen, how would the channel stay there ??

i was thinking of extending the channel down as far as the screen supports and having it fit with a captive bolt and butterfly nut.

but the centre is the problem, holding it against the screen tight enough to keep the rain out.

I have an MK hood and it comes with a fibre glass channel that fits over the screen frame.

Mine snapped as it was too tight so I made a new one out of ally channel, for the corners of the screen I slotted the channel.

Once I had the correct shape I put the channel over the screen and used tape to hold the shape.

Next was to use a piece of 1.5mm ally sheet to copy the exact shape of the bow, this I then guled to the bow using contact adhesive.

The whole thing then got sanded down and painted.

the hood goes over the top of the bow and and folds back inside the channel to make a good seal on the screen surround, again stuck on with contact adhesive.

As the sides of the hood are a little lower than the bow I then used a turnbuckle attached to the screen supports to hold the hood and bow down.

Works a treat and no having to try attaching anything else to the screen frame.

My alloy awning channel is held on with 5 countersunk M3 bolts and a lot of Sikaflex. (It survives 'motorway' speeds and is watertight.)

I used a Caterham screen which already has nice little stud poppers in place for the hood. Probably not what you want to hear
