Two pack paint and advice...

Evening everybody

I'm going to be trying to paint my defender bulkhead when it comes back from being galvanised, so I'm going to have to get myself some paint.

Where would be the best place to get it from?
I guess I'm going to need some etch primer?
Some sort of primer?
Metalic Colour 2 pack top coat
Then lacquer

I will be acid washing the the bulkhead with t wash first to pre age the zinc

I've never spray painted before so this is going to be new to me so is there any advice that people can give me

Ps: this is a defender so it's not got to be the best flawless mirror shine paint finish but I want it to look good

personally i'd go for cellulose. you can still get it from hugspaint on ebay, which is also called nu-agane

given the health risks of 2 pack blah blah blah, i'd go for cellulose if you've not sprayed before, you need a good mask obviously, but the cellulose seems a bit more friendly if you've not got a proper spray booth with extractors and filters

If you are doing standard land rover colours, paddocks - whom you must know if you have a landy - sell enamel. Safeish to spray. Otherwise get cellulose from nuagane. Thats what i painted mine with.

T wash is a trade name for mordant solution.

Isn't enamel and cellulose the same thing?

Wot he said

It is going to be done in two pack, nothing else.

I have access to twin filter respirator with the correct filter elements, it is going to be done in a marquee.

Personally it's 2 pack every time, it's just so much better.
Take as many precautions as you can, full body cover and an air fed mask, or failing that a really good
organic vapour mask with good extraction. I'll sit back now and wait for the doom bringers.
You breath so many toxins on a daily basis, especially if you live in a city, so as long as you are sensible
then go for it.

I was under the impression metallics are usually bone in basecoat, then lacquered?
2K primer filler is fantastic stuff, 100x better than celly as it doesn't sink anywhere near as much, and is much harder. Takes a little more effort to flat, but the results are much better (especially if you are like me, do it rarely)
My other tip is to get a tube of acrylic stopper, about a tenner for a small tube, but brilliant for sorting all the tiny imperfections that appear, dries fast and hard, doesn't rub out like celly stopper.

I have had paint for a couple of cars from jawel paint on ebay, they seem to have a cheaper arm now as well:
CAR PAINT STOPPER FILLER ACRYLIC FINISSAGE TUBE 180g | eBay

The one time I have used 2k lacquer over basecoat was a pair of doors for a mate. He bought the paint and prepped the doors (ha ruddy ha!) but an hour of stopper and 600 grade, followed by a double coat 2K primer, a flat and little more stopper, a double coat of basecoat and finally a couple of coats of lacquer and they were stunning. All applied with a cheapish generic gravity fed gun. A day was left between each paint type, so took an hour or so for 3 days.
