Appeal for help!! the bonnet saga...

All, after one disasterous attempt to make my own alli bonnet, and the resultant lump of bent scrap, I'm looking for some assistance!

I have read all the relevant threads, looked at various techniques, but this is the one thing that I'm sure I'll ar*e up.

So, is there anyone who's willing to travel to help me do this?

Any help would be appreciated - beer tokens, beer and takeaway food await anyone williing to accept this challenge!!

If you wish to try again, go for a bit of floor vinyl as a template material.

The stuff is nice and malible when warm but stiffens up when cold, after two attempts with card and the following waste of ali, I can thoroughly recommend it.

I spoke with the guy who made the stunning aluminium bodied locost at Donnington. I asked him for his tips for making a bonnet

1. Make a template to cut out the ali
2. Mark the centres of the curves on the template & transfer to ali
3. Bend the ali at right angles to the grain in the ali (just visible as if a brushed finish)
4. He bent his bonnet around a bit of pipe - no fancy rollers etc
5. Fold the channels that will sit on the top chassis rails last, after draping the bonnet over the chassis and using dividers to scribe a line to fold along

It's as easy as that!! Can' wait to trash my first sheet of ali !!

Pity you are so far away I love the ali bashing.
You need two sizes of pipe. look out for the yellow gas mains being replaced The contracters have loads of scrap in the right size. One of my last workshops had a lamp post right outside it that tapered.......dam if I didnt move away. front curve is smaller than rear. As the man says template with stiff vinyl lino (Forbo Nairn) (Made local near to us here in Kirkcaldy)

I used my welding gas cylinder as a former.

Thanks for all the advice lads.. it's still too "black art" for me to waste another nice big piece of shiny metal!!

you know what i mean-

method 1 ...bend it over your thigh, lamp post, gas cylinder, rolling pin..

method 2 .. use ratchet straps, melting soap, blowtrorches

hmmmm..

Ok, if no "knight in shining armour" is going to come and do it, then i suppose I'll have to try again!

so, i need to get as many things right before i start- what thickness and grade of alli is going to give me the best result?

If you need some advice, U2U me your number, and I'll explain how I finally managed a decent bonnet. It's not too difficult, especially if you avoid others builders mistakes!

Regards, Ian.
