composite nylon?
just been to the garden centre, and they have a woven fabric type stuff you use to cover the ground to stop weeds.
its shiney, woven, similar in construction to carbon fibre, and i KNOW its not going to look like carbon fibre, will it work to make a few hidden
panels?
with it being woven, i think it might be easier to work with than fibreglass to get an initial shape for a rather complex piece i'm needing to
make. basically i need to make it in place, on the side of my chassis.
i guess this stuff is made of nylon, its not going to melt when i put resin on it, is it?
its just the horrible cans of resin from halfords i'll be using. got no need to buy in bulk from anywhere

If you want woven, why not just use woven glass matting?

I doubt its made of nylon.... More likley to be some sort of plastic.... the plastic WILL melt!
If you are prototyping a complex part... assuming you have made a mold... I would be wanting to use chopped strand matt... its available pretty cheap
if you buy a few meters on a roll from CFS

Shhh... your making me look silly :p
What I meant was, its more likley to be a cheaper polystyrene type plastic which will get attacked by the resin

i need to try and make it from the chassis itself so there's no mold, theres some wierd curves involved, but the £6 delivery for a few meters of
chopped strand matt is why i'm looking at alternatives. this stuff is cheap (half the price of woven matt from CFS) quite stiff so it hangs
nicely. i guess the best way to find out is to just try it

The problem with all materials is, as soon as you add the resin it will sag and drip.....
Build up a former under neath using cheap building foam and clingfilm....
And yes, the postage from CFS is expensive.... I tend to order enough supplies for a year to make it count

There are more fibre materials than Glass, carbon and kevlar. You would not believe how many types of material are made into fabrics for the use in
composites.
I used to use one called (not sure on spelling) diolin, which was a plastic similar to nylon, so it looked like white carbon fibre.
And denim is apparently quite good to use too.
So if you want to get some, then give it a try.

We found East Coast fibre glass supplies (or very similar name- check web site) at South Shields to be incredibly cheap for resin and mat and bloke in
charge was extremely helpful - you can ring him up and pickhis brains and years of experience of doing all sorts of stuffhth

well, this stuff didn't melt in the resin, i don't think it stuck particularly well either though. just did a quick test, cut a small
piece out, and put it on a piece of ali wrapped in brown tape, poured some resin on, and although it stuck down quite well, i tried peeling it off the
tape, and it just fired shards of resin everywhere as it broke up.
