It had to happen one day !!!!!!!
For the first time in 5 years I drove away from the fuel station with the cap on the rear deck , I was rather distracted by trying to fill a jerry
can , only to find out the pump was offline ( no signs up) so had to move the car to another pump, with that and messing with a jerry can it was only
when I got home and thought it was odd that I could smell petrol so bad.......!!!!, I drove back the same route and eventually found it, thankfully
all in one piece and scratch free ( almost) .
So, do you have an aero filler and have you secured the cap to the car or body of the filler itself?, got a few ideas, what have you done?.
Or are you not as stupid as me?

Have one with a key that cannot be removed when the cap is unlocked.
ie its unlocked out off the car with the key in it, or closed and locked.
That way you cant drive away with the cap not in place, as its ends up attached to the keyring when not in place in the filler hole.
ie you cant start your car due to the filler cap being in your hand when you go to start the car.

of the jerry can into the car, so I could put the empty can in the boot of my car. Unfortunately I forgot to replace the fuel cap with the keys still
in it and must have left it on the boot lid. When I got home I realised the fuel cap was missing as were the keys. I wasn't prepared to
retrace my steps from Teeside looking for it. Fortunately I had a spare set of car keys and also managed to buy just the filler cap from the
manufacturer.
Looks like I for one, am just a stupid as Rich....

mines the same, and even if i did start the car, having the fuel cap banging around on my knees, would be annoying!

The silly part about it is i have never done that before with any car with loose caps, been driving for 26 years.... I think it was just the
distaction of having to move the car that messed up my train of thought at the time. I have an idea to tether the cap to the internal lip of the
filler without it impeding entry with a nossle, just wondering what other folks do when this happens.
Hopefully it WON'T happen again, bit like the time I forgot to fasten the bonnet and it went on flying lessons without me....
I guess you only do these things once..........

The CBS catalogue has instructions on how to make a tether - easy, simple, cheap.
I'm addicted to brake fluid, but I can stop anytime.

I've done it once - filled up at Leicester , next stop was at Maidstone - and no cap ! It would have been sitting on the pump back at the
filling station.....150 miles away
I was stopping there to pop into Fisher's , so I did - and managed to scrounge one exactly the same as I had lost - handy , as I was on my way
to Dover for the ferry at the time
Its cuz I is blond , innit

Sounds like there may be method in the madness of the IVA regarding attaching the fuel cap to the car via a tether?
BTW Claire, hope your digits are mending?
It looks like the Midget is winning at the moment......

Hi Rich
This was one of my fails on iva even though, as mentioned, my key can't be removed when cap undone.
To get around iva, I got some chain from a kitchen sink plug, attached it to lip on cap and then to a long bolt on other side. I then dropped this
bolt down the filler hose and it acts like an anchor. Passed my iva with it and haven't managed to lose cap yet. Cheap fix

Ah well, at least I am not the only one who has done this.... At least I can count myself lucky in finding it again in one piece.
Macbeast mentions the CBS catalouge which I have just seen (Page 351), that is pretty much what I had in mind and is the same one I am using, although
I had to remove the flap assy from mine as some of the local nossles will not work with it. Thats a job for today I think.
I was unaware that it is an IVA fail if not tethered, odd how many production cars still have loose caps though, my tintop does.

my current tin-top has a tethered one adn I've even seen some GM cars have a place on the back of the filler flap to clip the car out of the way
instead of dangling like my focus)
but every tin-top I've had with an un-tethered cap has been one that the key that cannot be removed from (well not without a bit of effort
anyway) landrover 110, pug 106, mk2 fiesta.....
although I did manage to do it in my old mk1 fiesta (non-locking on the passenger side) - I left it on the roof !!
luckly it was still there half a mile later when I realised

Cant believe it was still on your roof, very lucky..... my tintop does actually have a place behind the flap to hold the cap whilst your filling up,
it is also a lockable cap, but I lost the key years ago and is different from the cars igni key. Maybe because that car has a dedicated position to
store it is why I have never lost it?, I may look into that as well - not done any mods as yet to the cap.

as I don't think I'd have got a replacment cap in 'oyster gold'
swapped that cap for a locking one off a mk2 (amazing how many mk2 bits fitted my old mk1 )
I've driven lots of cars that had a seperate key for the ignition and fuel cap, but aslong as they are on the same keyring it shouldn't be
an issue
