I don't think that the mounting point is the issue. Most brackets fail at the point that they flex the most.
I use 10mm solid round bat on mine (not a 7) and they are ok.

Hi Mate, they look very nice, BUT, can never quite understand why people make cycle gaurd brackets out of flat strip, its always going to fail at some point. Why not use 3/4" tube, with just a flat flange to mount the gaurd on. Cheers Ray

There's nothing to fail apart from the weld for the flat onto the plate.

There are no other bits to fit onto it.

Very similar to the ones I made for my avon and never had a failure in 3500 miles!

They look similar to mine in that each leg is made from a single piece of flat, but I bolted mine together (no welding skills) and looks like I used thicker bar

Yep - only my front leg doesn't fold over the wheel so one less bend to worry about!

Still can't see where it's gonna fail though.

I think the design is fine, the usual point of failure is when using tube & the tube is flattened to either provide a location point or to change to flat bar for the "over the tyre" section. When using all flat bar as you have you have, as you correctly state, no weak points to fail. Looks neat, hope it works as planned.

I no longer run Furore Products or Furore Cars Ltd, but would still highly recommend them for Acewell dashes, projector headlights, dominator headlights, indicators, mirrors etc, best prices in the UK! Take a look at http://www.furoreproducts.co.uk/ or find more parts on Ebay, user names furoreltd & furoreproducts, discounts available for LCB users.
Don't forget Stainless Steel Braided brake hoses, made to your exact requirements in any of around 16 colours. http://shop.ebay.co.uk/furoreproducts/m.html?_dmd=1&_ipg=50&_sop=12&_rdc=1
