capri live axel-will it fit?
I can get hold of a 2.0L capri and i'd like to know if the live axel will fit the ron campion dimensions and if not what do i need to do to make
it fit. Also is the engine the pinto or crossflow? Can all the donor parts be sourced from a capri? Alot of questions but if they can be answered
it would put me nearly ready to start building so any help will be really helpful

my aim is to build my own locost wether it takes me a week or 10 years to get started, i'm sure i will sometime

the capri axle will fit a book car technically but it is a lot wider than the escort axle. It might look out of proportion and need odd bodywork. best
on a +4 wider chassis.
not sure about the engine or running gear.
Beware! Bourettes is binfectious.

With 10 1/2 rear arches, the capri axle looks better on a book chassis. You have better clearance between the tyres and the trailing arms. It is much
stronger, better ratios for non BEC engines and much easier to find than the escort hens tooth.
If you can keep you head, whilst all others around you are losing theirs, you are not fully aware of the situation

No special modifications needed other than a little more room in the drivers seat area.

I'm using the capri axle in a book chassis as well. I have just been inquiring at Luego for the body work and they do body work that will fit
extra width of the axle. You will need to let them know thats what you are doing as you need the velocity wings not the locost (so Grant informs me),
but you can have 15" wheels with 205 tyres in there Wings :-D
I did do go over there a while back to take a drive in the Viento. I got to see the GRP, it's top knotch. I WILL be ordering mine from them.

I have a capri axle on a standard chassis. doesnt look to bad if you use the right wheels

For the record axle width measured across the flanges that the brake back plate bolts to
Escort, MK1 and 2 Cortina, Classic -- 48 inches
Capri 68 on MK1 to 3 --- 50 inches
Cortina Mks 3 to 5 -- 52 inches
The above applies to matter what type of Ford axle is fitted.
The best choice of axle for standard with car is probably the Capri is the Escort axle dosent leave much clearance on the inside edgeof the tyres.
Most Capris also have 9 inch brake drums of various withs wherevas most Escorts use 8 inch drums..
And also Hillman Hunter, and Avenger axles also fit and take ford wheels.

One more thing you can use ford wheels to narrow or widen the track
Escort MK1&2 Capri wheels = wide track
Escort FWD and Sierra Wheels = narrow track.
Cortina 3 to 5 standard steel wheels are somewhere in between --- however in the hands of owners many Cortinas ended up with Capri wheels.

Some early 2.0l capris had cologne v4 engines in. Very heavy and not very powerful. Not ideal for a locost.

Much the same can be said for the Pinto lump., except the V4 (and early V6) was even less reliable.

Where did you get your information from, my Capri axle measures 52" in between the backplates, I measured it for someone else trying to identify
a mystery axle - I hope I have not told them duff info
(I never saw the car that donated my axle, but it had clamps for cart springs, no ears for cortina tailing links, a salibury diff 3.75:1, and all this
seemed to confirm what the scrappy said - that it came from a 1.6 Capri Laser)

A while back a few of us who were in the Yahoo group collect info on Ford axles -- I contributed the Escort and Anglia (which 2 inches narrower than
the Escort !)
My info on the Capri axle came from an old Capri hand a Capri owners club member who built a Capri based book chassis, he swore blind that all Capri
axles were the same. He might have got it wrong, it might be that all Capri axles are the same width between spring pads and an additional 2 inches
was added perhaps on the MK3.
The only other Ford leaf sprung salsbury style axles were the P100 and Transit 75 both of which are 5 stud.
