paint advice needed
OK, so it's time I started painting the aluminium panels. I want to get a good finish, obviously, so would like to benefit from locost
builders' experiences. What techniques and paints have people achieved good results with?
Should I do it on the car, or off it? (I'm thinking off).
Spraycan? Roller? Paintbrush? Other?
What kind of paint / primer do I need for aluminium? Is standard primer OK?
What's the best way to get a good colour match with the fibreglass bits (it's going to be a white car, but there are lots of different
shades of white).
What layers / how many? (I'm thinking 3: primer, paint, lacquer?)
What should I use to prep the aluminium with first before applying primer / paint?
What's a good, hardwearing brand of paint / lacquer?
thanks in advance for advice... :-)
PS: black wheels on a white Seven = win? GF is unconvinced but I'm pretty sure it will look great.

for my aluminium radiator support, i scratched it up with 80 grit sand paper i think (might have been finer than that, can't remember) then
sprayed several coats of etch primer, then colour over that. i did it with rattle cans as it was only small, but i don't think i'd spray
the sides of a car with cans. compressor and spray gun would be my choice!

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

Normal primer will fall off ali, so you have to use etch primer.
80 grit is VERY coarse, 320 wet and dry would be my choice, etch prime that (after panel wipe/tack rag) with a couple of coats. Then depends what
paint you use. IF you use a roller or brush, you could use 2k stuff. Couple of coats of 2k high build primer by those means would give plenty of
depth. DO NOT SPRAY 2k unless you have breathing gear (air fed mask etc) Topcaot in celly or 2k.
But I am not sure what sort of finish you will get. There are no shortcuts to a good finish, spraying is the best. And painting is not cheap. As an
example to paint a small car I spent about £250 on paint/thinners/primers etc, and that was fairly cheap paint!
Re colour match, many places will mix to match whatever you have, so you can give them a sample and they will make the paint up to a (more or less)
exact match. Fade rates etc will be different, but there is no getting round that.
