Clutch release bearing question

Hi all

Could one of you smart guy's answer a question for me.

A guy down my street has been talking to me about having to change the clutch release bearing on his BMW 3 series and we differ in our opinion of how it is located and works.

The reason it needs changing is that when the clutch pedal isnt pressed it sounds dry and whines badly as sood as you push the pedal down it stops with no noise,if you put it in gear and drive away you can here it whineing.

I said it is a bearing that is spinning until you press the clutch and it make contact with the preasure plate and then it stops turning whilst you select a gear and then when you release the pedal it starts to spin again and that the release bearing is connected to the actuator or arm

Am i right?

He has a completly differant idea and said that the preasure plate and clutch plate has to come off to change it

It's a bearing which always touches the centre of the pressure plate, and when spinning is noisy as it's worn out.

Depressing the clutch loads the bearing and takes up any play in it which means the noise goes away untill it is let out again.

It's always spinning.

The clutch doesn't require removal to change it, just the box needs to come off.

EDIT: it can either be a dedicated release bearing which would then be attactched to a release arm or it could have a concentric slave, which is a combined slave cylinder and bearing in one which would require replacing to solve the noise issue.

Unless the plate and cover has been changer recently it is always considered worthwhile to change the whole lot while the the engine and box are appart

Hi ya.

Just a little bit of my opinion

I would say it is a bearing in the gear box itself and not the release bearing..

When the clutch pedel is released the release bearing should return enough to release most preasures off the release bearing so you should not get any noise from it.

If it was the release bearing you would hear it at its worst when the pedel is applied.

When you applie the cluch and the car is statioary the only bearing then spinning is the release bearing, none in the gear box, release the clutch then the gear box bearing start to turn again and thrust race will relax.

So new gear box sir.

It can be either input shaft bearings or the release bearing as said above. The release bearing gives this sort of fault too.

Try to load the clutch pedal slightly, like 1" or so but not totally depress it, if the noise goes it'll likely be the release bearing, if you have to depress the clutch fully to stop the whine, then it'll more likely be the input shaft bearings.

If there is a slight delay between depressing the clutch and the whine stopping, then defo the input shaft bearings.

assuming it the input shaft bearing is it possible to change in your garage at home or is it a specialist job,it maybe worth him changing both the bearings at the same time if possible

It's possible but if he doesn't have the pullers required, or a manual for the box, and is at all uncomfortable about splitting it then he could end up in a pile of cogs and brass quite easily, if it's an E36 then the boxes can be had from about £30 up so it's no contest really.

I sometimes navigate in night events for my mate who has an E30 with an E36 box and this is how much he gives for them if they knacker up.

It's not worth the potch really.
