Has anyone made a bulkhead/scuttle?

Has anyone actually made a scuttle or has everyone bought a plastic one? I have tried to make one and it looked great until it came to tack weldig it in place, then it warped. Didn't do that in the book, or did it? is just a case of working till it's smooth and ripple free with a bit of filler here and there? Anyone got pictures of steel ones that they have made?

Sorry dont have a pic but made mine of steel. Used a 1" x 1" frame that was the exact dimensions of the chassis where it was to fit. The front face was made of steel and welded to the 1 x 1. The rear (ie; drivers side) was made of 3/4" steel tube bent to shape and welded again to the 1 x 1. I then wrapped it in steel sheet and tacked it to the front panel, rear tube and bottom 1 x 1 frame. Make sure you dont continually weld it, just tack, as it will distort with too much heat. You can always seal the joint with compound to make it waterproof. I then bent up a 3/4" wide bit of steel strap and welded it to the front panel for the bonnet to sit on. Hope this helps.

Forgot to say that I made it seperate from the chassis. I fixed it in place by welding some 1" wide tags to the box frame that hung down over the chassis box section. I think I used two either side and 4 across the width. I drilled the chassis, put nut inserts in place and screwed it in to place through the tags. Means it can be removed at any time if required. If you send me your email address I will try and get some pics if you want.
