Rear Panel Cover
Ok, so I'm about to make a cover to fill in the top of my rear panel. I have 6mm thick marine ply and plan to cover in the 3M Di-Noc Carbon
Fibre sheet (I have this too). Questions:
Do I need to treat the marine ply first? If so what with?
Whats best to bond them together?
Should I sandwich another material in between to get the best finish.
Tip and ideas gratefully received.
Thanks,
Matt

Doesn't the 3M sheet come with glue on?

If the material isn't sticky backed I would suggest using a double-sided tape like the stuff they use for carpets, alternatively you could use a
contact cement but they can be difficult to spread evenly
Whay are you going to do about the edges?

I think it might be difficult to get a good finish with the DI-NOC on plywood?

Can you explain why? I could use Ally but thought wood might be easier.
I'm planning on making it in 4 parts:-
A large rectangular main section and then on either side 2 smaller sections to acomodate my roll bar back stays.
Also, plan on fixing Aero fuel cap on top o/s.
Thanks,
Matt

I am doing almost the same thing, Di Noc shows imperfections very easily, so I am using lots of coats of spay putty, sanded flat until the grain is
gone completely, you will need 3M primer on the edges and on the return edge.
It may be better to spread body filler over the panel, but only enough to fill in the grain, then primer fill, any way you do it means hard work.
I am beginning to think leatherette may be easier Or use MDF?

what ever you do remember to coat the ply all over with a thin coat of something (varnish) to stop it warping and would give you a smooth surface to
stick things to

Why not use acrylic instead of ply? It's not going to warp when wet and the 3m stuff should go on perfectly.

I'm just at this stage as well. I have made an MDF template and I was going to either use a sheet of aluminium or marine ply and cover it with
vinyl but I like the checker plate idea.
My problem is getting round the roll hoops as I have two separate hoops.
Also, does it have to be a door or can you seal it? i.e screw it down?
