marking out panels for painting

say i wanted to paint a stripe on a car, boat, whatever, what can i use to mark it out?

i bought a RC boat of flak monkey on here a few months back, and been sorting out the body as practise for when i paint the car. what can i use to mark out the centre of the boat? and the edges of the stripe? already made one failed attempt last night which ended up a bit wonky, like very noticebaly wonky!

can i use pencil? will that react with the paint? permanant marker maybe? then paint over it?

here's how it looks just now after stripping off 4 layers of paint! oh, then painting it white lol

Get yourself some Tamiya masking tape in 6mm,10mm,and 18mm widths, then go for it, it is especially made for what you are trying to do, make sure the edges are down tight before you spray, there TS series of paints work well on glass fibre.

why spray the stripe on its far easier to apply vinyl stripes

Wow from that first pic I thought you were customising an ironing board. Looks a neat job though. Don't use normal decorators masking tape cos it bleeds and cellulose seems to melt it. Many moons ago I did a Honda CBR1100R replica and used gold pinstriping tape inbetween red and white that worked quite well.
