problems painting stainless

Hi,

Second post on this subject unfortunately. I have a stainless radiator surround for my Falcon which I have painted red to match the rest of the car. I used U-Pol Acid #8 primer but although the finish was very nice and shiny it is chipping off at the slightest knock leaving just bare metal underneath so obviously the primer did not stick. Very disappointing as I was ready to fit the surround and now I have a problem

Anyone got any ideas how to successfully paint this thing?? I did take 400 grade wet and dry to it before the primer so it wasn't like it was a mirror finish.

Cheers

i had ali side panels which i painted with 2k and sanded a little bit but when i droppped it tons on paint came off.

I then used my steel wire brush set and proper messed it up. then used thick primer and then 2k paint and its fine now.

i know its different from your issue but i guess the principle will be the same as the primer hasnt stuck....

cheers

Thanks

I cannot help you on how to paint it but can recount a story, commer Q trucks in the army were all painted camo.

When I was an apprentice one of my instructors recounted the days when he was a conscript, they noticed the paint flaking off the chrome so knocked it all off and got a day in the cells for making it look like the army was wasting money on trucks by buying chrome parts!!!

Probally quite hard to paint then

You need to key the surface with wet & dry then etch prime

light blasting maybe to proper kill the chrome finish? Or even acid dip that platers use to clean up stuff prior to plating?

acid dip, hmm I wonder if alloy wheel cleaner would do the trick there? does seem I need to do some serious keying of the surface first. Cheers guys
