Paint choice and safety
Hi,
Scratching my head after reading several paint product data sheets - they are far from simple to understand!
I am painting a set of alloy wheels which have been blasted back to bare ally.
My plan is to use Upol acid 8 etch, celly primer followed by lechler hydrofan waterbased colour coat and then a 1K clear to finish.
I know the hydrofan is an odd choice considering the cost and drying problems but i have the stuff already and managed to dry it ok on a previous job.
I actually found that it sprayed really well.
So question is will an organic vapour type filter mask be adequate for all of these products when used in the garage?
I do have access to an airfed visor however my air supply only has a regular cheap sealley water trap and filter. There is enough air to run the mask
and gun but considering the filtration am i best with the filter mask or airfed mask???
After reading a government safety sheet which stated that alot more than just 2K paints had isocyanate in them i got more worried but understanding
data sheets is not easy!

why not just powder coat them? Once you have a place to do the curing, it is easy. MUCH easier than regular paint.

I second powder coating them. Just throw them into the kitchen oven to cure them. No need to die a death from chemicals eating your brain. However
if you really want to spray them, I'd use a ABE organic / inorganic vapour filter and a P3 particulate filter in front of that to stop it
clogging up. When you say you have an alternative air fed, is the air coming in from a fresh air supply? Or is it the same air you'll be
spraying in?

I have found the powder coat when used wheels to be very brittle and prone to stone chips and heat cracking.

Your air supply needs to be very clean & dry so you don't get pneumonia...

Would it not have been easier just to have them professionaly refurbished at about £35 - £40 each?

The compressors would be moved outside into fresh air when painting.
How suitable is powder coat for wheels? I had a quote for £40 per rim to powder coat but i wasn't sure it was really the best system?
Begining to wish i had never bothered with these wheels when u can buy minilite reps from rallydesign for around £60!
