Full roll cage

As I rarely use my MK Indy Fireblade on the road these days but still do numerous track days and feel vulnerable with just the MK rear bar, to which I have fitted rear supports, I am considering fitting a front bar with top and side impact bars. I have had it on the track for 12 years without any incidents, but you can never tell. Your thoughts please, (1) Will it reduce the cars retail sale value and (2) Basically, is it worth it. Thank you.

Agreed - after I wrote my car off there were suddenly full cages sprouting on other club members cars

I hardly use it on the track but felt more vulnerable on the road with all blind muppets with SUV's and the mass amount of lorries as I live near port of Antwerp.

So I added full cage with side impacts for road use.

And it's removable if needed for future sale or so. Not that I'm selling.

I added firstly a front cage, and then side impact bars, it feels so much safer both on road and track, cant see it reducing the car's value, unless it is an utterly crap job !

The MK Indy I built only had a roll hoop (welded to the chassis).

If I build another it'll have a proper cage.

I've since been in a crash where the van turned over and I'd just insist on a roll cage now. If designed and fitted properly I can't see it lowering the value of the car. A way around that might be a bolted in cage, but the bolted in cages I've seen never look quite right and IMHO unless the chassis was designed and built for a bolt in cage I'm not sure it'd be a very tidy job.

Have to admit I'm probably going to sell my complete and unused hood, sidescreens & windscreen. Then use the money to fit a cage instead.

I'd do the same - you dry out and warm up pretty quick - you don't get better from being pulled to bits!

I think a full cage is a fantastic idea and something we will start seeing more of.

For those of you who have fitted cages, how have you gone about this? Are there any suppliers who offer a kit which is a near enough fit which just requires a little bit of refinement or have they been made through places which bend the appropriate material as per your request?

Many years ago I was visiting a small company who does machining work for us. Very small outfit run out of what looks and smells like an old barn. I was having trouble sourcing some 32x3mm CDS Tube at the time and i asked one of the guys if they could recommend a reasonable local supplier, they asked what it was for and when i told them it was a roll cage for my mini they walked me over to an adjacent shed which was filled with tube and roll cage jigs. Nothing had been touched for a very long time but they told me that they used to build roll cages for Fisher race cars and externally mounted Defender cages. I asked if he would sell me some and I was told i could have a load of lengths for the costly sum of £10. I gave the guy who helped out a few quid for the help and he loaded the material, plus some extras into my work van and i still have some stashed away in the garage. i may have to visit them again and see if i can have a rummage. Buying the tooling to bend such significant pipe Ii cant imagine is overly cost effective.

Thanks for the replies and that decides it, a full cafe it is. The guy who did the rear supports is going to do it for me when he can after this lockdown. Once again thanks for the advice.
