Cycle Wings..........Argggghhhhhhhhh
I am now getting to the INCREDIBLY peeeed off stage with the cycle wings/stays for my locost.
full story:
I currently have ST cycle wings, which are marginal but okish on width, but don't wrap the wheel very far, have crap edges which need strip
around them which then looks shite in my opinion.
The ST wing stays are known for falling to bits and flapping badly (same as lolocost ones). I replaced them with some from another supplier, which
then did not suit the wrap of the ST wings (my fault really) and didn't clear the caliper mount bolts. I have modded them to suit but they
really don't do the job. I have cut the ST wings to suit the stays (spent 3 hours of wasted life in the garage last night!!!:mad and the
effect is that the whole lot looks like a pile of shite
I NEED some decent wing stays, which I don't really have time to make, and some decent wings. Looked at the carbon effect ABS plastic wings, but
the 200mm ones are a tad narrow and the 260mm ones are too flipping wide and look daft.
I am on the brink of buying carbon wings from Westfield at the moment, but then looking on the WSCC site, it seems most don't like the westy
wing stays and use Tiger Racing ones..............

Anybody got:
a) Some pics of Tiger wing stays to suit Cortina uprights.
b) Some pics of Luego 240mm wide cycle wings
I am just getting sick and tired of trying to save time by buying stuff then ending up spending more time than if I had made it myself to start
with!!!

Maybe a tad narrow at 217mm wide, but worth a u2u I'd have thought.

My Tiger ones snapped as did a few other Tiger owners I know as they are crap as well.
The only design I have seen that hasn't faiedl is when each "arm" is one piece from the upright all the way round the bend and
fitted to the cycle wing.
I made mine from 2 lengths of 3mmx30mm flat and welded together at the base where they bolt through small welded on tubes to the upright.
My friend made his out of one length of 10mm round with three lugs made from tubes to bolt to the upright.
Neither ever failed.

I copied Ray Hudson's idea of mounting them to the caliper bolts. I used some angle I had lying round and it's a bit agricultural but
it's effective.

cheers for that, looks like I might be making my own then!!
I have some 1/2" round handy and some suitable flat, so when I have done some more mechanical jobs to calm myself down a bit I will make an
attempt!

I used 10mm seamless hydraulic tube (about 1.5 - 2.0mm wall thickness). I agree on the ST wings - s**** is too polite a word. Mine are ST carbon
ones, wet laid and have mind of their own. If you use the tube it can be bent at 90 deg. and enter from the top of the curve in line with the top
surface, just need a mitred 10mm hole. I bonded them straight to the resin underside with PU sealant/adhesive. I'm not over impressed purely
because of the ST wings; granted they are light, but flippin 'ell they wobble - and they won't wrap around 185-60x13s too prettily.

Are the old clamshell wings out of the question.
They look nice - but I've heard they create lift - is this really a big problem ?

I'm not mad keen on them. I think they suit the "classic" type lotus 7 clone, but mine is more of a minimalist and modern take on
the subject and they wouldn't really "go"
yes apparently they do lift a fair bit but on the lanes how often are you doing over 100ish? I think it's that sort of speed that they really
take effect at and on the back lanes that I want me car to be fun on I won't be over that sort of speed apart from the straight bits
Just remembered you are from scotland though..............bit different up there in my experience.........lots of really quick sweeping stuff

Have you thought of this..... flat triangular piece of steel welded to round, then angles from the side of that to hold the wings in place....
can't seem to get it to put a picture in the posting, but there are 2 in my photo album

A nice setup for Sierra uprights, but I am using the Cortina ones, which sadly don't really allow that type of mounting (no split in the top of
the upright for location)
Anybody with sierra uprights would do well to copy that though!

My wing supports are made from 3 pieces of 6mm x 20mm flat steel strip welded together, plus 3 spacers. The design was blatantly copied from someone
else - Steve M, I think.
No sign of cracking so far, after 1200 miles (touch wood!). There are no real stress risers, so I don't expect it to crack like the
'traditional' ones. But don't hold me to it... 
It's dead easy to do, so I can draw up a diagram if anyone's interested.

My Mac1 stays are very good. I know of a few people who have switched over to them. Might be worth looking into a set. Their arches cover my 7"
alloys very well indeed.

One of my Luego stays broke in less than 500 miles , ended up doubling the thickness on the flat section. Wings are noticeably more steady and no
signs of further failure. Touch wood !.

My lolocost ones are still fine, many many miles on the clock, 1 trip into the bushes and 1 trip into a wall, the latter bent the wishbone, chassis
and steering column but the wing stay didn't bend.
