R&D Rear mud guard

Hi All

I've been having a play with a sheet of ally and can't make up my mind about the shape of the bottom edges.
The outside corner will have a radius for SVA, but it's the horizontal bottom edge that I'm wondering about.
If I slope them down to the bottom of the chassis they look huge,
but as they are they sort of finish in the middle of nowhere.

Please ignore clamps, dents & hammer marks, and the lack of a returned edge.
It's just an R&D one to see what it looks like in the flesh.

Opinions needed.

Cheers
Paul G

The flat top makes it look like an afterthought Paul, a slope out from the tub looks more purposeful but it might be hard to achieve. Rescued attachment rear-m-g-mod-1-s.jpg

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Grey vinyl seats were the best colour match I could find.

Tried grey seat belts but I kept loosing them.

Pete. I love it.

I don't think I could get quite that much cone shape though.
I have just 28mm of space on the side panel (see pic) before I would need to remake it.

It would make the fixing flange a lot harder to do. Before, I started with a flat sheet and
folded a 30mm bend on it, then shrunk the edge so it formed the main shape.
To slope it, I would need to develop it as a half cone and knock the flange on.

It's food for thought though. Thanks for the reply.

looking good paul,

Difficult to tell from the piccy but do they stick out far enough? they look pretty borderline?

for what it's worth I think they look better sloped down to line up wioth the lower edge of the body.

as far as the top edge is concerned, have you seen the rear wings on a Tiger Super6? personally i love the slope down on the inner edge......

Cheers

They do look better with a slope on the front edge. Whilst it may be a fair bit of hassle, they do look a better with a slight slope on them to the top egde. Maybe not all the way to the top of the side panel, but not dead flat either. Otherwise, yet more excellent work from you Sir!

Hi Dave

When I make the actual wings the outer edge will be longer, then rolled under to form a wired edge.

I'm going to follow the advice on the bottom edges sloping down to the bottom of the chassis.
I wouldn't dare go against Gaz. (Tee he)

The Tiger ones do look ace, but its wheels are well out from the side panel.
Mine are close to the side on suspension compression so that's not an option.

It's just the flat top / sloped top issue to decide on now.

See you at Stoneleigh ??

Cheers

Hi, and thanks.

Another vote for the sloping top then.

Better start making a 3 metre trammel bar then to mark them out with.

Cheers,

Paul G

Oh stop complaining, how hard can it be?!
Well, at least for someone with your witch (warlock?) like metal working skills!

Hi Paul, I've just got back off holiday to pick up the posts on your rear mudguards. I do agree that the angle approach on the lower front edge does look good. I'm not sure about sloping the sides a la Westfield. I remember that Trev D told me that when making rear mudguards, before shrinking, he wheeled in quite a high crown, at least an inch and a half. When the mudguard is formed by the shrinking most of this crown disappears but it does leave just the hint of a curve which to me is quite pleasing.

Hope to meet up at Stoneleigh

alb

John
