Gear box ratios
Hi guys,
I have been offered a quaife box at sensible money but am not sure the ratios are quite what i'm after. What do you think?
1st-2.04
2nd-1.54
3rd-1.21
4th-1:1
5th-0.87
Running a 4.4 diff and a 20v 4age engine, redline about 8000rpm.
I work that out to 61mph in 1st! Think it might be a tad to much.
Advice needed.
Thanks
Ben.

I'm running a quaife with
2.2
1.54
1.21
1
0.87
and a 3.92 diff which I believe is about 63mph at 8k.
It isn't much of a problem unless you get bogged in crawling traffic as long as your engine has good low down torque.
The whine can become a bit anoying but you can always slot it in 4rth for a bit of p&q.
Cheers,
Colin

20V 4age not known for having the most talk in the world. They are fine at low revs but really come alive above 6000rpm.

well my planned setup is almost the same too, instead of quaife i have thought of t50....
yeas true that 20v is not renowned for low down torque, but it ain't that bad too... i have driven an AE-101 with 20v st swap and have used 5th
gear as low as 2k rpm.... and with the low weight of our desired car i think it should be just fine...
thanks

The 4AGE 20V may not have a particularly high peak torque but it is very flat and there's plenty of bottom end for trickling along in
traffic.
I've got a 4.4:1 diff and a BGH E7 GBX and 1st is basically too short so I use 2nd most of the time.
I had a quick play with wheel/tire sizing and your ratios and 185x60 13 inch wheels look to be a good combo with that GBX.

So to hijack this thread a bit. I suppose the question may help others though!
Bimbluk: With a 4.4diff and that gearbox what are the revs at 60 or 70 mph in top? What are the ratios of first and fifth on that box?
Cheers,
Andy

Yes, That's what I thought justin. Only problem is my wheels are 195/50/15 and they are a nice new set of OZ chrono HT's so I don't
want to change them. Might just give it a go. Can always sell it again.
