Had enough of Norton, need a firewall.
Thank God my Norton Internet Security needs upgrading and is now well out of date. I should not have upgraded last time but it was cheap.
I am going to turn it off and uninstall it but first I need to replace it with freeware.
For the AV software I am using AnitVir Personal Edition, which seems to work OK.
Ad-Aware and sometimes Spybot for spyware.
But I need a firewall - what would you recommend?
I use AOL if that makes any difference.
It will be a treat to uninstall Norton, I have always hated it. To be fair I have not had any virus problems though, just antivirus problems.
Thanks, David.

I had a fair bit of trouble uninstalling Norton - it insinuates itself everywhere, and the Uninstall Wizard doesn't get all of it. After
several tries, I got most of it. It still created problems until I did. Now I'm using AVG, Free Edition. I'm very pleased with
it...when I installed it, it found 20 or so viruses that Norton (the latest version!) hadn't found, even though they'd been there for
months!!

What version of Windows are you running as the updated Xp firewall is actually not to bad unless you are doing something exposed such as running a
web server, and need fine control of port blocking.
Kerio 2.1x is a very good freeware personal firewall don't download the later version as they have extra unwanted features that are time
limited.

XP Pro without the necessary to stop the 'genuineness' reminder.
I will be replacing the PC (1100 Duron) towards the end of this year so I may buy some software then.

Replace with a MAC no virus problems nice interface solid system and you can run windows under parallels if you really want to. If you do all internet
stuf on the Mac side you will have zero problems. Mac OS has a reasonable firewall built in, otherwise I use the firewall functionality in my adsl
modem/router, this also does not respond to ping so I never have any hassle except with bad service from ISP!

Do you not have a router? Most routers now have excellent firewalls - you can just block everything coming in. You can check how well protected you
are here: http://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?rh1dkyd2

Ditto for Linux, except it's free.
Substitute Parallels for (free) VirtualBox. Job's a good 'un.

I bought AVG internet security package and have just tested it as suggested earlier - it passed all the tests so I'm pleased.

Thank you everyone above.
Got rid of Norton, using Kerio and have used Crapcleaner.
PC has not been this fast for ages. All the go slows have gone, looks like the 1100 Duron will be with me for a bit yet!
