Help with cut out in chassis
bpgoa - 12/6/07 at 01:07 PM

I've just fitted my zx10r engine into a book chassis.. but I had to cut through one of the lower chassis rails... there are two which run parallel creating triangulation at the bottom of the engine bay.. i've had to cut a chunk out of the passenger side bar...

question is.. will this make a big difference... should i add in extra tubes to compensate and where.... i don't want to add steel in for the hell of it... it has to work for a living...

got any pics to help?

when i fitted a zx9 into a book chassis, i think i managed to leave both bars in with the sump between them. Is the zx10 sump bigger or have you not managed to centralise it?

Dont forget that a bike engine doesnt go in parallel to the diff looking at your pic I would have thought you should be able to get it in without cutting the chassis.

I've had to put two diagonals in to get past this lower rail with the sump.

I added tubes in mine, they do not weigh much but must make a huge difference in strength Rescued attachment Chassis front 2 april 2006 small.JPG

bit late now its in, but i would've had that engine 3" further over towards the driver, so that the prop cleared the tunnel by about half an inch at the entry. Also, would not have the engine at that angle, IMHO it should be parallel to the centerline of the car.

ps you a levellers fan?!

no not a levellers fan... why did you ask...?

I talked to the guy's at MK and they said to set it like that... line up the sprocket face perpendicular to the propshaft bearing.. exhaust 50mmm off the top chassis line... sump 40 - 75 mm under the lower rails.. I'm going to try and get that chopped... sump line parallel to the chassis rails.

anyhow... what about these chopped rails..

from your sig:

On and On the River flows... We the Undertow

is a line from a levellers song.

Anyway, just link the broken points to the nearest most suitable other points. This is my take anyway:
