Diff spacers
dave107 - 12/12/08 at 06:21 PM

Fitting diff and need to make up space with 17mm spacers each side, i have been supplied with washers to do this but i think it would be better done with a large spacer and a washer each side, the washers are steel plated would the spacers be ok using aluminium or should i use steel.

I too used washers but think a spacer would be better

best to make spaces form steel I recon and make sure thay are at least as big a diamiter as the washers
(I'm planning the same for the dax)

I thought ali might be ok as it would be between two steel washers, and i happened to have a lenghth of 25mm aluminium bar.

that should be ok, the danger is that part of it squashes/ digg's in to the spacer and/or the diff housing which can leave the bolt loosse - its happened when people forget to fit the washers between teh diff and what ever bushes the are etc...
(assuming it a similar setup to the dax that is - I can't remember exactly what teh MMR ones are like)

Are you using one long threaded rod or individual bolts. I used bolts with a thick nut and washers either side to take up the slack which seems to work very well as the diff is going no where.

I went to the bother of making bespoke stainless steel spacers - when I went to fit them, the mounting brackets and diff faces weren't square to each other, I ended up using washers - bit of a waste of effort !

Thanks for replies.

Going for nut and washers on each bolt fits easy and having the nut locks off bolts very nice.
