After our enginge failure about 3 months ago, a very long process of sourcing, installing and modifying the new engine, we have finally started the
new engine for the first time yesterday. The primary reason for the frustratingly long 3 months is that we also decided on adding an oil cooler which
we hva ordered almost a month ago now... nothing arrived... Finally yesterday we have canceled our order with the Hungarian supplier and ordered
directly with Merlin Motorsport. The stuff should be here within 5 days...
Anyway, we decided that we can drain the water and oil, fit the oil cooler and then refill the fluids easily, but we really want to see if the new
engine works now, so got in the garage and after about 3 tries, the engine caught and started idling nicely!
Test drive is tomorrow and on the weekend on the public roads, we will not take the car to the track unless proven fine on the road.
Some more mods we have made while waiting for the oil cooler:
- Bonnet vents to help lower the under bonnet temperature
Bonnet vents 2
- Seats fitted on aluminium box sections riveted to the floor and resting on the chassis tubes, instead of being fitteddirectly onto the floor. The
one single outing saw the underside of the alu floor stretching slightly and the seats were moving a bit when trying to pull on them by hand, so we
decided this was safer and more secure. The two bolts are purely there to fasten the aluminium to the right place while riveting.
Seat fixing modification
- Made a sump protector. This one is not fitted just yet, but is ready and I will post a photo when available.
Can't wait for the test drive now and see if the breather modifications on the R1 engine solved its problem. I hope it will be track-safe
now...

looks very nice but I'd put a piece of plastic wing piping under the scuttle to improve the joint
Is that carpet you have on the floor

I like the vents, how did you cut them out - did you just dremmel them?
I have just fitted mesh to my nose cone and have some left over and am thinking of putting some vents in the bonnet
