MNR VortX R1 Turbo with Progressive Nitrous Oxide
maximill666 - 11/11/09 at 06:42 PM

Well I just thought I would post some photos of my just completed Turbo & Progressive Nitrous Oxide installation on my R1 engined MNR VortX

I've still got to set the fuelling up, with the AFR Wideband kit thats fitted, but it seems to run well even before I have got it set bob on.

Just waiting to pick a bracket up from the powder coaters for the rear of the enourmous silencer & I can go for a drive, I'm well chuffed & cant bloody wait

Some modifications to the cam timing & lowered compression, for the time being the boost is set at 9-10psi max until I fit the carrillo H-beam chromolly con rods I've just got & forged pistons.

The car weighs aprox 475Kg, so will see well in excess of 500bhp per tonne without the nitrous & in excess of 600bhp per tonne with a modest progressive 50 shot of Nitrous. More once Ive fitted the rods and forged pistons.

It started out as an idea to do it all on the cheap, but before I even started that went out the window & ended up costing a bloody fortune cos almost everything was bought brand new & there was a fair old bit of work involved, seemed like I was living in the garage, but its worth it in the end.

Heres some of the spec:

Garrett GT28RS roller bearing turbo
Tial MV-S 38 wastegate
Tial 50mm Blow off Valve
Big Alloy intercooler
Alloy plenum with Direct port Nitrous oxide crossfire injectors
Stainless 316L Turbo manifold
Apexi AVC-R Boost controller
AFR Wideband kit
Phormula KS3 Knock analyser
MSD Digital RPM window switch
Oil scavenge pump
Mocal Oil cooler
All Aeroquip & silicone hoses
Huge exhaust silencer
Wizards of Nos Nitrous Oxide direct port injection with a Maximiser Race progressive controller & dual purge
etc etc etc

That looks like an awesome install. love the turbo showing. It looks like a right angry beast in the last pic. Think you will need some man size pampers when its at full throttle.
Well done though.

Rob

twybrow - 11/11/09 at 06:47 PM

That is pure filth - I love it! That last shot is awesome!

How long has it taken you, and if you don't mind, what has it cost you so far...?

shaun fulcrum - 11/11/09 at 06:49 PM

Oh my god that is amazing!!!!! bet you can't stop going in the garage to look at it

Best of luck keeping it in a straight line

You've done a tidy job!

I'll pop over when you are happy to show off your car to an interested party!

Whether I'll dare take you up on the passenger ride...errrr....i'll make sure I wear my brown trousers!

Paul (Notts) - 11/11/09 at 07:03 PM

Had a good look at fitting nitrous oxide to my v8 Viento but after talking to my insurance company decided the cost of the insurance was too much.

Whats your insurance like ?

Paul

Steve G - 11/11/09 at 07:07 PM

That'll be a banshee when you let loose

Impecible build by the looks of it and I really like the interior layout and the exposed turbo too.

roadrunner - 11/11/09 at 08:17 PM

I like it very tidy and very shiny.

INDY BIRD - 11/11/09 at 09:06 PM

Hi nice job

any internal work or comp lowered for all that power??

i can vouch with turbo like that you will not be dissapointed, almost double the power,

good luck and yes sort the afr before you open the taps up, anything past 12 on full boost is not good i run at 11-11.5

cheers and nice job again

daniel mason - 11/11/09 at 10:11 PM

that looks amazing lee. a bit different to last time i saw it! what happened to the kawasaki lump?

From start to finish the conversion has taken me approx 9-10 weeks of a few hours nearly every night and all day saturday & sundays.

Cost just over £6K inc all the nitrous gear, which was just under £2K alone, but I wanted all good quality stuff.

David the Phormula KS3 Knock analyser is a real good piece of kit, Ive had one previously on another car & is really good when increasing boost levels and detecting detonation before it occurs

No I've not driven it yet Dave, just waiting to pick up a bracket for the exhaust from the powder coaters on Friday then I can give it a run at the weekend, just as long as its not raining.

Stock internals at the moment with compression lowered from 11.8:1 down to approx 10:1 & slotted sprockets fitted to alter cam timing, plus an adjustable ignition advancer to retard the ignition (mainly for the nitrous). Colder spark plugs in there too.

Ive got some carrillo rods ready to go in soon & going to get some forged pistons too.

I changed my mind about fitting the 12R motor & thought it would be better to Turbo the R1 instead

maximill666 - 12/11/09 at 12:44 AM

Thanks for all the nice comments gents, much appreciated

bigrich - 12/11/09 at 09:09 AM

Very impessive install. Like most of us, I will be waiting for the full report of how it go's

Love it

imp paul - 12/11/09 at 09:20 AM

lee it looks mint mate i love it you have done a well nice job of it and some nice parts i see gt28r go on mate lots of power just get them rods in and some pistons before massive boost lol top job all the best paul

Davey D - 12/11/09 at 09:57 AM

That is awesome . I keep pondering on either turboing or supercharging mine, but cant decide which way to go. the thing that put me off turboing was the lack of space for the turbo, but that looks good what youve done.

Have you put any heat protection around the bodywork near the turbo? as it will get very toasty around there

G.Man - 12/11/09 at 11:16 AM

Insane but cool!

bassett - 12/11/09 at 01:05 PM

Awesome looking work. Gives me something to plan for the future

GeoffMM - 12/11/09 at 01:17 PM

Looks fantastic and when you think about the costs £4k for a full install really is very reasonable indeed.

Where did you get all of your parts from if you don't mnd me asking? BigCC etc?

Should not be long now and i can start putting my kit together once the christmas money rush is out the way.

Breaker - 12/11/09 at 02:16 PM

Veeeeery nice indeed.

Only 1 remark: the position of the air intake doesn't look optimal to me. Won't it take in too hot air as soon as the engine is warmed up?

Yes your right it would be if there wasnt any cool air going in, but the bonnet is getting vents to duct cool air straight into the filter

JoaoCaldeira - 12/11/09 at 04:32 PM

Hi.

I'm getting ready to turbo my R1 VortX - but with a TD04, instead.

First of all: CONGRATS! Absolutly great looking.

I have a few doubts on your installation, that could help mine (yes... I'm also after a lowcost turbo route... but hoping to keep that way! )

1) Won't the turbo get very very hot inside that space? How well protected is the inside fibres? Aren't you afraid of a fire?

2) Is the alloy plenum custom made? or off the shelf?

3) How did you lower the compression? With a cometic or double gasket?

4) Where did you install the Phormula? Do you have a shot? Does it read right? To which Hz spectrum did you aim? I'm thinking about the 4... why did you choose the 3?

5) Can you please elaborate more on cam timing? Especially "adjustable ignition advancer to retard the ignition"...

6) Are you running Power Commander with ignition adjuster?

7) Are you using bigger injectors or stock ones?

8) Which intercooler are you using? Any mods to fit the nose?

9) What is the intake tubing (plenum side) diameter?

10) Which oil scavenge pump have you used? Can you get a few pics of the installation?

11) Where is the pickup for the oil cooler?

12) Why such a big silencer?

Sorry for that many questions, but beeing in (almost) the same boat I got quite fascinating your install.
I'll skip nittrous for now, as I will keep the engine stock - I'm thinking about 5 to 7 psi myselft...

Best regards,
Joao

Gergely - 13/11/09 at 05:05 PM

Great project, nice job!
I would be very interested in hearing how it drives compared to the original state. What revs does the turbo kick in? Can you feel it, is it not too violent, etc, etc...

Take it very easy on the test run... and don't forget the camera and videocam, so you can share the pics and video!

A suggestion: If I were you I would try to cut the hole on the tub near the turbo nicer, and maybe see if a bonnet bulge would fit over the plenum. My 2p worth...

Great job! I like it!
Gergely

Agriv8 - 13/11/09 at 08:15 PM

You sir are a nutter but utterly fantastic well done.

Regards

JonnyS - 15/11/09 at 08:39 AM

Wow We need to see some videos of this in action

T66 - 15/11/09 at 05:43 PM

Yes we definately need some feedback on performance and also Caldeiras post on spec etc...

Youtube needs a new video of that daddy..

Nice install - very tidy

Winston Todge - 20/11/09 at 01:39 AM

Unbelievable... Just about to pop to the US on the way home from a while abroad. Gonna be picking up a NOS kit on the way back home! 50 shot is plausible non progressive with a 4XV? What did you do about the clutch? Where would you mount the NOS injectors? Carb rubbers? Airbox? Would love to hear a first drive report!?

Good luck!

Chris.

GeoffMM - 20/11/09 at 07:09 PM

Definately looking forward to the video and perhaps some more intricate photo#s for the geekier among us.

JoaoCaldeira - 30/11/09 at 02:21 PM

Hi.

Any news?
How did it perform?

Regards,
Joao

coozer - 2/12/09 at 04:30 PM

May I ask who made the fabby bits?

Inlet and exhaust manifold.. I'm thinking of building a zetec turbo motor..

Steve

mark w - 23/2/10 at 01:39 PM

Any more on this? Would love to see a video of it running.

eddie99 - 23/2/10 at 02:19 PM

Very Nice Install, with regards to MNR grill, i kinda like it. Think its something different which is usually good.
Am also extremely looking forward to reading about the first drive

What you need is one of these;

MNR Custom Cone
MNR Custom Cone

MNR custom made it for me. I, like many, don't like the bars because they scream out "PLASTIC" to me while the open 'cone is more in line with what a traditional ally 'cone would look like after paint.

I'n fact the 'cone would have been a show stopper for me, but Chris and Marc came up trumps and made me the cone with no bars

I dont like the Westfield's fake ducts for the same reason.

I've added a woven stainless steel mesh grill which will shortly be powder coated black but don't have a photo to show you yet.

maximill666 - 27/2/10 at 10:23 PM

Time for a bit of an update guys

Well since the last photos were took I have only just been able to use the car as the weather has been so poor, but that time has given me a chance to fit/modify a few more things.

I've cut the bonnet out & fitted a carbon fibre scoop, moved the air filter around next to the plenum inlet, just under the scoop and away from the back of the engine bay so hopefully that should provide enough cool air. Fitted an MNR reverse gearbox plus heavy duty TRT props, carbon mods stone guards and I've also fitted some side decals.

Over the last couple of weekends I have managed to get a few miles in on the road & set up the fuelling. It goes like nothing I have ever driven, its insanely quick.
Got the boost controller setup with two different levels of boost
7psi - Very very quick , it has R888 GG's but in this cold weather even with the boost controller it breaks traction in 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th gear
10psi - Well its just silly, cling on for dear life, but my god its so much fun

Before anyone asks what its like with the nitrous, its seriously way way quick enough for the road and I will probably need my head testing if I use the Nitrous on the road much, so probably that will only really get used on the strip/track, honestly

Here are some photos taken today

It does sit low at the moment & I will be raising the ride height up slightly

The wings are MNR CSR ones

You really are going to have to get us a 0-60-0 or 0-100-0 time for that should be quite impresive. On an airstrip somewhere.

I will do Joe as soon as the weather warms up a bit. I have been out in the car this evening just before dusk & god its still cold, bring on the spring.
One plus point though is the cold air helps with keeping the charge cool.

Lee,

That is FAAAAN-FRICKIN-TASTIC!

Go steady out there, be shame to have that beast trasformed into a smear on the road in a puff of NOS!

What year is the engine? Can't see much of it but looking at the HT lead I'm guessing its a carbed version?

As I said in my U2U I've been planning for a while (read about 2 years or more) to turbo my R1 Fury but I keep putting it off.

Have got a fair collection of parts and a few ideas but not really the time or the money to take the big step of starting the project properly and taking it off the road (wrong time of year again now!)

David, if you are gong to Stonleigh come and have a chat

hobbsy - 27/4/10 at 02:10 PM

Unfortunately I'm overseas this weekend at a Stag do. I'm sure I'll have a great time there as well but I was looking forward to meeting up with a whole bunch of people at Stoneleigh.

Missed last years for some reason as well. Gah.
