Weight for CEC
pdm - 7/5/10 at 07:19 AM

Morning all,

I read this thread which was linked from Daniel Mason's engine height question:

http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=91191

On page three it states the finished car weighs in at 690kg wet and according to t'internet, the S2000 engine is 158kg with all ancillaries.

I'm wondering if anyone else has weighed a completed car please ?

The reason I ask is that I was thinking about how much an MX5 based kit would weigh. That engine weighs in at about 135kg but is obviously a lot lower powered. If a lot of the finished cars weigh in at the above sort of figure, I reckon I'd end up with something similar to a Mk1 Lotus Elise in terms of power to weight ?

Also given that a bike engine from what I can gather of t'internet is 60-80kg, what sort of real world weights are BEC's coming in at ? The above figure would indicate somewhere around 580-610kg wet ? Again that seems to be higher than I'd expect.

thanks very much
Paul

Seems a bit heavy, my zetec/type 9 embodied motor was 590kg with the 6' 6" sava man on board and a full tank of fuel.

I believe MNR's fireblade racer was well under 400kg.

boggle - 7/5/10 at 07:49 AM

i would like to see my bec under 500kg without me in it.....

pdm - 7/5/10 at 07:54 AM

Thanks chaps - thought it seemed a bit heavy. It made me think as I'd been working out cost of kit/bhp/power to weight for various kits and I'd estimated an MX5 based one at 540kg which sounds about right to me based on your posts.

In fact in anything it might be a quite a bit lighter than that if coozer's is 590kg full of fuel and driver.

Thanks a lot - at least I don't have to go and redo all my workings !!!!

cheers
Paul

I take many of the weight figures bandied about with a large bucket of salt (about the same amount of salt I take when reading some BHP figures ).

I had a Caterham S3 a few years back... weighed it on a proper set and it came in at 40kg over Caterhams figures.

Also have a couple of mates who weighed their kits after SVA and they were a good bit heavier than given when tested and a LOT heavier than the kit suppliers projected figures.

pdm - 7/5/10 at 08:05 AM

That's true as you can't just add the four corner weights up can you ?

westfield and roadrunner are quoting between 540-560 which is what I used as a ballpark.

RickRick - 7/5/10 at 08:11 AM

mine was weighed at 440 with a full tank and no driver, that also included the sva pass parts which are now removed

scootz - 7/5/10 at 08:14 AM

PDM is talking about CEC's Rick...

Slater - 7/5/10 at 09:11 AM

My MAC 1 type ZR with Zetec/Type9, no driver, fuel tank 1/2 full is 580 kg on the local quarry weighbridge.

matty h - 7/5/10 at 09:38 AM

My MK Indy is 610kg with 2.0 vauxhall engine and full tank of fuel.

Thanks everyone - looks like I am in the right ball park and it's good to know real world weights for BEC or CEC as it confirms my estimates really.

Werner Van Loock - 7/5/10 at 11:05 AM

my live axle 4age powered sylva strikers weight is 500kg without driver and half a petrol tank, but hasnt got a windscreen or anciliaries for it and for the rest bare necessities and 13" wheels.

wheel/tyre combo's can make a big difference on a kitcar.

skinned knuckles - 7/5/10 at 11:06 AM

should be looking at less than that. i'm aiminf for a reasonable 540 max

PAUL FISHER - 7/5/10 at 11:36 AM

As scootz already said, don't take much notice of SVA/IVA weights, most are done by weighing each axle on its own,one of my cars "bec" was 440kgs at SVA but came in at 476kgs actual weight.
A mx5 based seven will be around 550kg,thats what the new RoadRunner SR2 weighs in at,thats what makes the mx5 such a good doner, lots of light weight components

Thanks to all who replied.

I think 700kgs is about tops. I built mine with no consideration for weight, I built in crash resistance at both ends, and a real heavy weight scuttle, pinto with steel induction system, full padded seats, roll bar and supports in 3.25mm - I weighed in at 700kgs fully wet at SVA, I couldn't have made it any heavier if I tried.

On the up side, it has an excellent ride and handling, and still half the weight of a Sierra.

franky - 7/5/10 at 09:46 PM

I'm reckoning on 650 to 700kg's tops for my gkd with the m3 lump/cage/padded seats etc.

450+ bhp per tonne still though!

richardh - 11/5/10 at 03:39 PM

mine was 462 kilos without me.
That included full tank of fuel and a Quaife reverse. R1 carb engine

TimC - 11/5/10 at 03:56 PM

My 750MC Locost was about 530kgs with a full tank on board.

My Live Axle Crossflow Striker with pointless roll hoop, icklest possible drums and no posh bits was about 480kgs

Hard to believe maybe but true.

Until you're used to it, at which time you'll feel the itch to upgrade something

I'm betting you could lose or gain more than 50kg on wheels and tyres from best to worst when you add it all up - food for thought.

(Say 6"x13 split rim magnesium rims with light racing tyres to 8"x17" 'halfords bling' wheels with tintop tyres).

beaver34 - 11/5/10 at 04:27 PM

my shawspeed car full tank 1600 zetec se was 515kg

pdm - 11/5/10 at 05:50 PM

Thanks folks.

I think an MX5 base is quite upgradeable so I could start out standard and still not have "finished" so I'd be able to develop the car.

Would also give me chance to get used to a 7esque car - an MX5/BMW 4 pot based car will still be at least 30-40 bhp per tonne more than anything else I've ever owned !! My 6 pot would be over 100 bhp per tonne more !!
