Front bottom wishnbone bearing poping up
Andrzejsr - 15/5/24 at 09:44 PM

Hi,
I wonder if others had similar problem and what to do to solve that :

Bearing in front bottom wishnbone came off up

https://forum.wscc.co.uk/forum/uploads/monthly_2024_05/ZdjcieWhatsApp2024-05-13o20_07.51_dc2a1d1a.jpg.e11b76c2c944fb6697926e7c50d01aa0.jpg

On bottom its secured with circlip. Cant see.what secure it on upper side ? Only tension between housing and race ? How IT is on others MNRs ? Seems that
what it is is not enough... Wishnbone OEM new from MNR.

Thanks in advance for all suggestioms!

That would have had a circlip on both sides. The groove for it is probably damaged now.
Not ideal engineering. The load is being carried by friction between bearing/bush and the circlip. The better way would be a step/lip that the bearing is pressed up against on the load side and a circlip on the bottom (unloaded) side to secure it

Ouch! That looks nasty
There should be a shoulder "top hat" machined into the housing top, to retain the bearing.
If not, that is a dangerous design fault. I would also fit a spaced large diameter, thick safety washer on the bottom.

Eeesh if that's a circlip on both sides I'd be really uncomfy driving it. It will work most of the time, until it doesn't.

Thank You for that advices! That securing washer for sure good idea. And I have some reading.
Indeed I think also that it should be sth like this caterham wishbone :

https://caterhamparts.co.uk/wishbones/3807-wishbone-lower-lh-widetrack-metric-cars.html

and bearing and housing with collar / lip on upper side like this :

https://www.mcgillmotorsport.com/3/4-spherical-bearing-housing/cup-circlip-complete-kit-c-5-p-535

In mine MNR wishbone on bottom there is groove for circlip, on upper side no (btw this circlip rather holds bearing housing, only very little supports bearing). And no lip on upper side. There still is powderr painting above beraing housing. After measurements and examination in company that fabricate suspensions for motorsport, it seems that it was intendend for just pressing in.

Or - someone in MNR forgort to weld a ring on upper side. That would not alow for what happend, although not sure if will not restrict movement.

Today will take apart right side front suspension and see that wishbone. Already havd some plan but will read what @40inches linked, thanks again!

what does the wishbone/baring look like on the other side of the car?

are there any additional components there, that are missing from this side?

edit, just noticed that you are about to look at the other side. -good- and please post more pictures as you go.

Cant add pictures now, but have already second side on table and it is the same. Upper - no collar, there is visible tiny silver circle of bearing housing, then toward inside bearing race, then bearing ball.
From underside there is a circlip but - its there rather to keep bearing housing for not to fall. Only tiny section of circlip "ears" "support" bearing race .

Seems that all construction depends on force pressing bearing into housing .

Not sure why they not used that caterham-like solution with such housing with collar/lip :

https://caterham420detailedbuildblog.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/img_2858.jpg?w=616

This caterham upper collar / lip is specially shaped cone-like or bowl-like shape to not make collision with upright bolt as turning and on bump and droop.

MNR has flat this upper rim.

Will try to add pictures as those show more than words.

Just wonder if other MNR owners have experienced such failure ? strange as this failured wishbone was new one (new few years ago but never used before) , the other side is old (also not much use as car was standing few years not used) .

I think I will make new wishbones with bearings with housing this type

https://www.mcgillmotorsport.com/img/shp/COM8T%2BCUP%2BCIRC.jpg

With some gentle shaping upper part in caterham style bowl/cone-like / recessed shape to allow for more movement angles.

I have send message to Marc from MNR with picures, but no response so far. Not first time not ideal communication with MNR.

Saying that must add that MNR Vortx inboard chassis design and mine first experiences on track (well.. at least when all wheels was still connected to car ) wat really promisign ! car was so stable, felt like wider than it is, rear planted but nicely rotating on throttle lift on corner entry etc. Not saying about impressions from CBR 1000 engine (first time BEC ) revving toi almost 13k rop! wow! and this slippery cluctch, revelation! . Well I dod not make it to push really 100% hard, but must say habdling and balance etc are very very promising. So I must make those wishbones realiable and secure to use MNR at 100% .

I may be talking sh+t. But could the collar be welded on up side down so the bearing goes up from the bottom and the c/ clip holds it all together

Some pictures how it is done by MNR , dont know, maybe it was suppoused to be this staked or swaged type of putting all togheter but looks like this is not working or poorly made. Look at Yours wishbones at MNR's . Just metion - almost two weeks since I wrote about that to Marc from MNR , and.... silence. No answer.

Here is a not failured wishbone and failured ( failured was new so no signs of rust, maybe it need to be rusted to keep all togheter :-/ ) - from bottom yes, there is a circlip but its not holding bearing, but just housing for bearing . From upper side ther is nothing but tiny round "scratch" - maybe this is this swag or stack ?

Yesterday I got answer from Marc from MNR, seems that my case is only one he heard of.

Seems like that it is not bearing pop out from housing, but - bearing split apart ! it is made from two rings and ball, and those rings took apart , this is the type of bearing :

https://www.albeco.com.pl/pl/produkt/2HH1/lozysko-przegubowe-glxsw-16-fluro.html

Also I am in touch with local suspension for motorsport expert, he also uses this type of bearings in upper shock mountings in mc person and no problems.

Must have been failured from factory or dont know what happend.

adithorp - 1/6/24 at 11:45 AM

That doesn't appear to be what's in your first post picture.

That shows the whole bearing pulled out of the wishbone bush.
Even if what he says happened, it should be designed so it can't pull out like that.

Andrzejsr - 1/6/24 at 03:11 PM

It is, what was pulled out is inner ring of bearing, what is left in wishbone is outer ring of bearing , then there is third "layer" in wishbone - housing covering from up with flange most of second ring of bearing and from underside circlip doing the same.
We will fix thhis wishbone with the same new bearing , and fabricate second pair of wishbones with "normal" bearings this type like in Caterhams :
