Steering rack
paublo999 - 26/10/08 at 05:52 PM

Hi Guys, more questions related to getting my Vortx fettled...

The steering rack is a fordy one.. but appears to be a powersteering unit. Which rack is typically used and does yours have any play in either of the steering arms? weirdly my brand new rack has a lot of play on the drivers side..

at the trackday, A Thoirs from these fine forums turned up to ridicule me (good banter as usual) and suggested that it was a power steering rack and it should be lubricated from the pump.. I dont know but thought you guys might..

I'm sure Marc will be along in a mo to tell me...

p.s. I also felt a strong front end wobble at 90mph plus, so could it be related to the rack or should I get the tyres balanced first? Again brand new - Toyo 888 tyres and CXR wheels

Cheers
Paul.

If u have a picture of your rack wel soon tell you if it is a power steering on or not.

You shouldnt have any play in the ends, that will give u a wobble.

sorry about the quality of the photo, but I didnt want to take the nose cone off..

there is definately play in the drivers side arm and none of the passenger, but how could it be wrecked after 50 miles in the car and the first time I go over 90mph..

Cheers

Well looking at the picture I would definately say it was a power steering rack, so totaly useless in the present set up. It certainly has the three holes just below the steering arm that take the hydaulic connections Cheers Ray

Very odd indeed. Why bother cutting that down to size?

Get a new rack...

will need to see if MNR supplier the rack. I cant see why Jeff would have specified that particular rack and he maintains that he paid for a comprehensive kit..... strange indeed..

will call MNR if I get a chance today...

thanks guys

The power steering rack is used for it's quick rack type ratio i.e. less turns lock to lock.
That's what I was told anyway, I've got the same on mine, yet to finish the car though.

Thanks guys,

I wonder how the rack is lubricated? I was under the impression that the rack needed the power steering fluid to keep it tight and working right.

Can anyone who has this rack confirm if they have any play in the arm to the main rack please?

My passenger side is tight, but drivers side can move a 1mm or so, with definite movement. Is this normal?

Paul.

Hi, definately not normal, there should be no slack at all. One thing you could check is whether the UJ is tight on the rack. Slide the rubber boot of the rack and see if the UJ can be made tighter, that may be all it is, has to be done up "F" tight. Cheers Ray
