BMW M6
JoelP - 10/10/12 at 09:51 PM

My friend is thinking of buying an M6, which got me thinking about alternatives to suggest. What car under 20 grand could be a viable alternative? The one he's looking at has 525bhp and is derestricted so 200+ mph. Only thing i can think of is a tuned up mitsubishi lancer, which would be more useful over winter, but wouldnt give you that smile as you sit in it!

Any other ideas?

Personally can't stand the M6, bloated overweight posing car.

But I d'nt like the lancer either, fast taxi etc.

But then I rarely buy a car for what others think about it. But I don't think could imagine a car that's an equivalent either. Something audi is the obvious one.

Audi Rs6?! Think they are quattro....

535hp enough?

Would the M5 with the v10 and the switcheable 400/500bhp not be sportier but just as practical?

There must be a Merc equivalent too. Something AMG ish I'd have thought!

Cheers,
James

M5 V10 would be a better bet

FuryRebuild - 11/10/12 at 06:22 AM

CLS 55 AMG. All style.

Rs6 rs6+ or a s8 or sl55

The M6 is a coupe'ed M5 so same switchable engine. C5 RS6 is quiet old now (twin turbo V8) and the C6 RS6 (twin turbo V10) would be more than the budget.

this may seem like a crazy idea, but why don't you suggest he gets two cars....

one flashy BMW/Merc/Audi with a normal oil burner under the bonnet

the other (bare with me here) could be some kind of purpose build sports car, maybe something lightweight with steel spaceframe chassis and the engine of his choice - not sure if such a thing exists

911 Turbo for £20K!

Sierra - 11/10/12 at 12:59 PM

I would say an rs4 is one of the best cars for that budget, looks power and grip.

AllWeatherDan - 11/10/12 at 01:23 PM

911 all the way.

I was never a fan untill my Dad got one.

It's amezin

I would say M5 or the Nissan GTR

morcus - 11/10/12 at 06:12 PM

S-type R or a CTS-V, I've not looked but you'd probably get one of either for £20K.

IMHO, the 996 series is/was the ugliest 911 model produced to date, which would possibly explain why you can get a Turbo version for £20K.........

Got it in a nutshell there, i suggested the RS6 that tegwin posted but it was rejected on the basis of being very costly when it breaks due to all the mods, compared to a standard M6. The newer rs6 would have more power as standard but would be over 30k. We went for a test of the M6 today and put a deposit down, but to be honest its an amazing car.

Cheers guys!
