Recommend me a digital camer
omega 24 v6 - 26/7/09 at 11:28 AM

As the title really.
I'm going on safari so need something that focuses fast or does like an image lock on ( don't know the techy term for it). must be good on battery power and I'd say perhaps a 10mp.
I've been advised on this one
http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?pq-path=13039&pq-locale=en_GB
but as usual I'd never take advice from just one source.
Got a budget of around £200 ( probably the max of 200)
Thanks in advance folks

If battery life is really important go for a Casio like this: Link

I've got an older casio and the battery life is excellent [like it doesn't need charging for a 2 week holiday].

try and get as high an optical zoom as you can, this is important as picture quality suffers when using digital zoom, I have a Kodak Z650 excellent picture taking one drawback is the continuos shooting is only 3 frames so not much good if your wanting to pan a moving shot. The video function is also good quality. Dont get too enthralled in a 10mp camera the previous are also essentioal min is a 6.1 mp and as stated no probs with picture quality. Ideally a DSLR but these will be above the £200 you have. You also need to consider the media you wish to capture too as well and what is the maximum capacity. Newer camera can save th 8GB cards now and som allow faster write speeds.

Sorry if ive thrown a spanner in the works

I bought one of these:-

ebay linky

It's a brilliant little camera, with a great lens. Comes complete with a spare battery, charger, and a card.

It's been recently replaced with the TZ6 which comes with HD video, but is another £100 ish.

(Although if it's located in Swansea, I'm a Welshman!)

As above, I have a Panasonic TZ4 and its fantastic. TZ5, 6 and 7 can only be better. I paid about £130 for the TZ4. Its 10x optical zoom and 8mp but most importantly has a Leica lens.

I have recently bought a Panasonic TZ6 which i think it the Nuts! It has a 25mm to 300mm range and a large Leica lens. here is an example of the quality.

The TZ6 does not come with HD video but the TZ7 does. If you don't want HD video go for the TZ6.

If you can afford another £100 or so, you could get a digital SLR...

Yep! The Sony A200 is good as is the Low end Canon range. Not sure what Nikon are like at the budget end.

My dad bought an A200 with lens from the Dixons website last weekend £265....offer doesn't appear to be there any more, though it's still only £289 if you walk into Curry's...

Whatever you do don't buy a Samsung ---- mine eats batteries.

For lens quality which is what really matters Olympus or Cannon are always the best.
