What Gauges will I need.

Have people used a water and oil temp gauge on the R1 engine. Do I need a separate clocks , and how have people fitted the water temp sensor.
Please keep it simple. 1st time builder.

My own opinion is that you need the R1 clocks from the bike.

That's it (maybe a fuel guage if you want one, but the R1 clocks have a low fuel warning light).

All you then need is a brake warning light and Hazard Warning light fitting into the dash (I think)

If you use the R1 clocks then you'll have a temperature reading (comes from the 'stat housing) on the clocks. Simply extend the original R1 fan wiring to your new fan and you have the fan cut in sorted as well.

If you want the fuel gauge to work, you'll need the R1 submersible pump. I used 1000RR submersible and after ages pissing around with resistors and a rheostat I gave up.

R1 clocks don't show oil temp but show oil level. When you baffle the sump you'll have a choice whether to keep the level gear but you'll have to cut a hole in the baffle.

If you have a choice between oil temp and oil pressure, go for pressure.

I've gone for oil temp, oil pressure, water temp and fuel as seperate gauges.

I've sorted oil temp and pressure, I have yet to sort water temp but seeing as the R1 gauges have a water temp I'm not that worried about it.

I have the R1 clocks on mine. I added an illuminating fog light switch and a brake warning lamp. That's all you need.

I fitted a fuel level guage as a low fuel lamp just isn't enough if you ask me and a time clock, just 'cos it matched. see my photo archive.

Minimalism...

Might as well say what I'm doing....

Veypor VR2 to take care of RPM & Speed

SPA dual guage looking after oil pressure and water temp.

That's it - however the car isn't going near a road (except for on a trailer.)

As for how to mount the water temp, I think I'm going to invest in a 5PW thermostat as they have a boss ready to take the sender (4XV and 5JJ don't.) Just keeps it simple that way.

I know Colin and others have welded a boss into their pipework.

there are some nice little gauges around that can include two functions in one like the racetech setups, if you can go for capillary rather than electrical gauges as they tend to be more accurate

best regards

You can't use the boss in the thermostat if you run a 5PW though, I know you're running a 5JJ so that won't matter to you.

The ECU on the 5PW uses data from the stat to run the cold mixture control and idle.
