mnr loom horn

ive just connected the battery up and discovered the horn is permanently on. (well it wasnt at first but when i moved the relay box a bit it came on. must be a loose connection in there.. :O )

it turns off when i press the stalk washer button so im assuming the loom is wired in such a way that the button is now the horn instead of the wheel. fair enough, but it needs to beep when i press it not the other way round !

i have got the later sieera colum so have used:

plug 1:
53c - use for horn
plug 2:
54 - earth for horn

however there is no plug 2..? so currently the earth goes nowhere.

help?

(disclaimer, complete electrical dumbass. bear this in mind!)

I had a similar problem which turned out to be a dodgy relay, if you have another relay then try tat.

There are two types of relay or some have two tags, normally open or normally closed. The contacts make a circuit till you energise the coil and it sounds like you have the wrong one.

I had exactly the same problem. I did sort it out eventually. Connecting a different terminal to ground solved it I think. the chap who makes the looms for MNR got it a bit wrong. I'll look up the details of the change and get back to you.

The MNR wiring loom chart says that the black wire in plug 1 "headlight input" should connect to terminal W on the Ford switch. No. It should connect to terminal 31. By "headlight input" what it means is ground, to be switched to the headlight relay coils through the headlight switches.

On the same page it says Plug 2 "Earth for horn" terminal 54. No. 54 is the fused 12V supply for the windscreen wipers. 54 is connected to the horn switch (washer switch) when the button is not pressed. When the button is pressed then the then the horn, terminal 53c, is switched to terminal 31 which is now connected to ground.

leave the horn relay connected to 53c as stated in the leaflet.

Let me know if this doesn't work as my memory of the modification is a bit faded.

I have a similar problem the horn works when you put an earth to 53C with it all connected.

There is 12v on 53C all the time with the button pressed or not. How could I selectively put an earth to it only when the button is pressed?

I too have late sierra column switches.

ok i think this may be what the problem is !!! cant promise as i am not the best at wiring
the loom was made so that when you remove your sierra wheel you lose your horn, the idea is to use the push button part of the wash wipe stalk as a replacement, but on some of the sierra columns the wiring is slightly different i think ( this was a quick explanation from the guy who comes and wires up our cars ) who incidently did one on friday and had no problems ( when he returns from his jollies in two weeks time i will get him to write out the correct wiring etc for as many varients he has encountered whilst doing our cars as he can remeber )
