Dilemma

Ok I need help here ... I'm trying to justify to myself the use of GSX1300R engine or a ZX12R plus the cost of a drysump kit. Then again now i'm starting to think that an injected R1 would be more sensible.

I'm planning to build an RT ... mostly for hillclimbing and the odd RWYB, but it's got to be road legal. I'm trying to plan a visit to harrogate after the busy summer, to get a look at the cars. Please start spilling some constructive criticism.

Friend of mine bought a dry sump kit for his hayabusa engine last week - 1300 quid plus VAT = £1527

plus the cost of the engine......

Well it's nice to win a race, but i use hillclimbing to relax ... hence all the stress i've got bottled up in me since I sold my GT4 last september!!!

The R1 would be nice admittedly ... would leave me in the 1000cc class.

I had the very same dilemma....

R1, ZX12r or Hayabusa.

I eventually picked the zx12r after countless nights sleep, and hours on the phone to chris and marc about it.

Reason for the ZX12r..... cheaper than the hayabusa by about 1k, for about the same power (give or take a tad). And has i plan the trash the crap out of it on a track if it goes pop and bang not too bad to replace or repair compared to the Hayabusa.

R1 was cheap and it didn't have to have the dry sump.....but i wasn't so keen on the lower power outage that it had.

I did a few laps with marc in his R1 around Oulton park last month and i have to say the R1 did lack the punch in the straights...even with marc driving!!! Going around a corner was a totally separate scenario! I would have been disappoint with the R1 engine if i had gone with that route, mainly cos of the lack of power down the straights.

you must be used to some damn fast cars if an r1 7 feels slow!

To be fair though. most of the commercially available busa systems are gear driven from the original water pump drive. Water pump is then remote mounted. I saw said system the other day and it's nice, but 1500 quid ???

maybe i could settle for a baffled sump on the ZX ... until i get the dry sump ... i won't be thrashing it at first anyway ... i'm not used to RWD ... i'm used to 4WD.

Or am i just making up excuses?

I wasnt impressed with the R1 in a straight line at Brands, more Marcs ability in the bends..

But hey, I used to race 250 Karts on the long circuit....

to be fair on the day the clutch was slipping almost straight away ( still on standard clutch ) being the yorkshireman i am i want to get my moneys worth out of the standard one before changing also the car is not correctly jetted at the mo as it is awaiting sva so standrad needles etc are fitted

an r1 for most is plenty quick enough but the zx12r is the next logical step in terms of torque and driveability and power

think helfire is sucessfully running with a modded sump rather than dry sump kit. but i have always fitted drysump as a precaution

Also worth ointing out, that with 2 in the car, it is always gonna feel different, as it makes a huge impact on the power to weight, specially with my fat ass

Costwise you have no excuses: £ 1200 will get you a 2003 R1 (in my case, from Malc @ Yorkshire Engines).
Powerwise... it seems ZX12R is going cheaper then Busa power for the same hp figures...
