Rear uprights / bearings: how are they mounted?
Hi all.
Sorry for the description, but I don't know the correct words in english (and I lent my Sierra manual )
How is the rear bearings mounted?
I received a box wich have 2 bearings, 2 rings, and 2 hollow rings with rubber gaskets.
I assume the 2 rings (which should hold the bearing should be discarded, as this function is done by the bearing carrier)
Is this hollow ring mounted on the halshaft or on the bearing carrier?
Either way, if mounted on the halfshat won't it rub against the bearing carrier?
Pics would be VERY appreciated...

The outer rings of the bearing are a tight/press fit into the bearing carrier, one on each side. The inners (with bearing races) fit into them and the
stub axle goes through the centre, the hub goes on and the hub nut holds the assembly together.
The outer races were hard to remove - I used a large flat screwriver and drove them out with a screwdriver trying not to damage the carrier casting.
Knocking the new ones in was also a lot of hitting hard with a hammer.

Joao,
A Freind showed me this one ( it works too as I have used it on many ocasions ).
Romove the old outer ring by placing a run of weld arround the flat inner of the ring. Then just tap them out .
Saves the roughing up the carrier unless you weld the ring to the carrier (DONT do this ).
tap the new outer ring in with a large drift / Socket ( or get a local garage to press them in for you ) .

good tip agriv8, i forgot - i did this and it worked a treat, wap the current up and the heat seems to do the trick and they practically fall out.

Ned,
I think the heat helps to crack it from the hub.
But My mate said its due to as the weld cools it contracts ( as I am sure any Book builder on here will agree thus the need to tack both ends before
welding up ) this pulls the ring in.
PS My mate (Chris ) is trucks grease monkey and is very handy chap to know ( especially when doing this sort of thing) as usually he come across this
sort of thing and knows the get out of jail cards.
The only thing that scares me is when he says right ( this need a little persuation ) sometimes that means the 20 lb lump hammer !!!!
Ps he helped me rebuld the V8 ( Read he drank my beer in return for the odd word of direction - fair deal)

Is the inner oil seal mounted on the halshaft or on the bearing carrier?
If mounted on the bearing carrier, will it rub on the halfshaft?

That's how it seals the grease in, if it didn't touch it wouldn't work.
