Polo GTI gearbox issues?
Slightly off toppic im afraid...
Im thinking about buying a polo GTI 2001 1.6 in the next month or so, but there are a lot of people complaining about the fact that the gearbox gives
up and eats itself...some as low as 30k miles...
Im not sure 100% on this, but I get the impression that its caused by catastrophic bearing failiure... Does anyone know this for sure?
Is it possible to get bearing races and the other bits needed to rebuild the box so its not going to destroy itself or is it best left to a pro?
(Should I just get the box rebuilt or wait for it to die and then get it done?)
(I did ask this on a couple of VW forums, but there are more technical people on here!)
Chears guys..

Funny you should ask this.
Was looking at very similar car for me and SWMBO just the other day.
Still unsure as to buying one but as far as box goes i wouldnt pay for new/recon as there is a box to fit as a straight replacement!
OK this it aint the most technical or accurate but Audi has same box that doesnt fall to bits! in another car!
I'm still working on what car etc but will let you know.
Otherwise (scrap yard £200 for a right-off) Box was fine!

Its a bit of a pain that the 6 speed box from the Lupo GTI doesnt fit...but thats life...
Would be interesting if there is an audi box that is a direct replacement....but Im not going to hold my breath....
I could spend £200 getting one from a sccrappy, but that might let go as well...
Im thinking preventative maintinance on the bearings might be an idea?
