Perhaps you should read this!
For those with an R1 engine. Just to let you know that I had a disaster on the way to a track day, the gear change cable broke, new one ordered, but
for anyone who is interested, there is a clear line of sight from the spindle to where the gear stick is, so I used a jubilee too attach a piece of
aeroquip hose and ran it into the cockpit and stuck a handle in it! It worked a treat (although shift direction is changed by 90 degrees) so I have
now replaced it with a bar until the new cable arrives and it has no play and a good positive action!
Now the big one:
Drove the car with no bonnet and it transformed the engine, with the bonnet on there was not enough air getting in the carbs. Drilled 4 carb inlet
sized holes directly above the inlet. It looks great, was free and with the extra air the car goes like stink.
Just thought that might help someone, but before drilling the holes just floor it with the bonnet left at home and see if theres a difference.
Good luck

Yes, that would make much sense, on the R1, air is drawn in the front of the fairing so when on the move the airbox is slightly pressurised. (see left
I run one)
Most bike carbs are designed to draw still slightly pressurised air, thats why the airboxes are so big, with forward facing inlets.

Take the sponge off and fit the very nice airbox that Pipercross do?? Not cheap but its the way i am planning on going. Hopefully it will keep the
noise down for SVA / trackdays too
linky to airbox

Good advice Ed. Bugger - looks like I have another £175 to find since the bonnet is NOT getting drilled.

I would be tempted to suggest it was a supply of cool air rather than a previous lack of air that made the difference.

The engine used to bog down even before the bay had heated up, the old sponge filter was squashed by the bonnet so was never ideal but I didn't
think it would matter THIS much!
Tim, drilling holes now probably makes mine as light as yours and actually looks great!
Paul, many thanks for the link to the airbox, I had looked for ages on the pipercross site with no luck.
Two things, has anyone noticed a difference with the airbox,
and where is a good high pressure spot for the intake (is the nose the best)?
Cheers

I'd forgot how badly squashed yours was - makes much more sense now!!!

I ran mine without a bonnet (after it flew off and a truck ran over it) and it ran like a dog. My theory was that there is usually a bubble of low
pressure air over the bonnet of a car and that was strangling the engine. That said, I have an airbox already.

Did the airbox make a positive difference or have you never not had it?
