Survived Mallory Park
ReMan - 6/9/09 at 07:42 PM

Thouroughly enjoyed yesterdays trackday at Mallory.
Considering I live within 5 miles of it and have been and watched lots and even ran round it i'd never driven it!
So with the sump baffel fitted to the Fireblade motor with hours to spare and a big bright oil light in my line of vision and a high pressure low pressure switch fitted off I went.

So after gingerly building up speed and confidence around Gerrards without a flicker, I figured it must be working so went on to thrash it for the rest of the day both 1 and two up, and with so few there the track time was unlimited, no queuing at all, just straight on and off as you like

There was only 1 other allcomer 7alike there ( local guy who had recently bought the Pinto engined MK in the second picture, was this previously someone here's?) the other 2 were the trackday experience cars. The rest were a good mix of escorts, corsa's BMW's, Golf's Scoobys, and some nice big money cars too (GT3, 350ZX, a pukka racing Clio etc).
Anyway a great day and topped off with a very complimentary critique of my driving by the instructor too!

The car never missed a beat again, so looking forward to squeeezing one more in before the end of the year. Mind you I burnt £60 of fuel on the track, so need to start saving now!
Cheers

How did you get on with noise testers in the blade - it's 101dB there isn't it?

Wife's cousins live near Sapcote so it seems like a good idea to combine a visit with a thrash

I love Mallory Park, it is my favourite little circuit. I've been every September for the last 3 years but this year they weren't offering half days. The full day price was a bit much so I'm off to Abingdon in a couple of weeks instead.

How fast did you dare go round Gerrards? I'm told that locost racers turn in at 100 and keep their foot down. I was on the edge of bottling it turning in at 90. Exit speeds over 100 were exciting enough for me.

No noise testing was done. 95 db may have been mentioned during the briefing, but not a meter in sight!

I started with my very quiet can 85-90 at a guess, but it was strangling it, so then swapped to my R1 ~98 dB can , runs 95% power did'nt see that my road (very loud) pipe was necessary no point in upsetting anyone

They were doing half days but only at the last minute I think.

I'm way off your pace!! 75 was enough for me, on Toyo Poxies, just hitting 100 down the straight before braking into Gerrards down to 80 on the turn in then 75 round and then 85 on the exit ish.

The tyres afer the gravel on Gerrards look so far away when your watching, but very close from the track And theres not a lot of run off when your exiting either!
I'd like another go with sticky tyres, as the Trackonline Westfield could drive round the outside of me fairly easily, but I was happy with my pace compared to the rest of the attendees

I hit 120 once on the start / finish straight, which was the red line in top. I was comfortable doing 80 round gerrards when a BMW estate passed me quite quickly on the outside on the marbles. I'm not sure if it was the same BMW who later in the day had a very close look at the armco

100 in a 12.5psi Turbo MX5 round Gerards is bound to end in tears:
