Yeah I'd be a bit uncomfortable with running on that. Is this on a recently purchased project or has it appeared on your own car over time?
I've had the car ten years and only just noticed! I'll add it to the list of things it requires. There isn't very much that doesn't need doing really!
Looking at the rust which seem to indicate heat damage to the paint, it does appear to have been welded after they were originally manufactured. If so
I would not run with those as the oil would have been cooked and perhaps the seals damaged inside. Perhaps they had a long thread on them and were
altered with an old damper eye. It's amazing what people will do.

I'm sure I've seen a youtube video that shows a swap from thread to eye, but it was on a rebuildable shock. I wonder if some previous owner saw that sort of process and figured a welded version would be 'just as good'.

The problem will be mission creep. If I get new shocks and a set up, I'd imagine it wants a new rack too, due to pretty shocking bump steer. Then
why not wishbones too, since they might be twenty years old? That's on top of my alloys being a good 35mm wrong offset and no tyre choice in 14s.
Add to that the rewire, the pathetic fuel filler neck, the trailing arms being an inch too long, you're not far off a rebuild.
what car do you have? I have the shocks for the robinhood, it never got on the road so only need a clean up. I have the rack too, as good as new as
far as I can tell.
