government computer spying

The recent news about the security services 'spying' on the internet activity of people has really surprised me. Do people really go on the internet facebook etc and think the security services/government wont or can't read their email private messages and phones calls?

If I'm online I automatically assume everything is being read or at least screened by a computer.

I am a younger student, and have been following the information on the new XBOX, here are some scary facts

- Xbox is always on, can't turn it off, just goes into a low power idle state
- Has to be connected to the internet to turn on
- Checks it's internet access once an hour
- Have to have the kinect sensor connected to turn on (Webcam and microphone)
- Microsoft signed up to the PRISM data acquisition program in 2007

So essentially you would have a computer in your home, that cannot be turned off, has to be always connected to the internet, and always has a camera and microphone in your living room/child's bedroom, and microsoft has signed up to essentially share or give access to all of this.

Very scary indeed..

The problem with that relaxed attitude is that what is "deemed" immoral or illegal is a flexible concept. You have to have complete faith in the government (and tomorrows and tomorrows) and our security services.

Not so long ago our security services thought it appropriate to spy on members of the Labour Party, CND and just about anybody with any sympathy for the republican movement - just think what fun they will have with these new toys.

That's really not the way to think about things, shouldn't you be entitled to your privacy?

Would you let the government install a camera in your living room just to make sure that you aren't doing anything wrong? Yeah sure because I'm not.

So north Korea sounds like a swell place to be in, constantly monitored by the government but it's all okay if your not doing anything wrong.

Isn't the 'Spying' that the government is doing immoral?

I do understand your point, its not that I think its right but its not going to change!

I don't vote, I don't watch child porn, I don't condone terrorism, they can read all they want of mine, most of it is on this forum, ebay, amazon & i spend a lot of time & money on the help for heroes site too! occasionally send some dirty pics n texts to my wife when were apart!

I firmly believe that there will come a day when Google will screw us all over, they hold so much information about us all and I'm sure a day will come when bad things will happen.

So you wouldn't mind giving me an archive of your emails, your internet searches and all media you downloaded or viewed on the internet??? Of course you would, why? because it's your private information that I would hope you wouldn't want other people seeing, even if it is boring legal and moral.

Only way to avoid surveillance is to be six foot under.
It has been going on for decades especially since cctv, mobile phones and the internet have become popular. Do you really want to go back to the technologies of the 60's/70's ?
