OT - Where to buy wood ?
mcerd1 - 12/3/13 at 12:36 PM

the ongoing rebuild of the house is gatehring a bit of momentum now - at this rate I might even be allowed back in the garage by the summer

but one of the things on the list is a big set of shelves at the top of the stairs and unfortunatly we just can't find any 'off the shelf' units that are the right size - so I'm seriously considering making my own

only problem is it'll need some nice wood and quite alot of of it - so where is the best place to get it ?

I'm thinking a nice lightish oak or similar at the moment, but would consider darker woods too

I can be a bit flexable on sizes but idealy something that I can get in ~3m lengths, upto about 250mm wide and 10, 12, 15 or 20mm thk

any suggestions ?

if you go to the forum on ukworkshop.co.uk and let them know where you live someone should be able to help you (and give loads of advice)

very good site for everything woodwork related

Local timber merchants

I use one called North Yorkshire Timber - there will be something similar near you no doubt.

Friends of mine used oak railway sleepers to have some bespoke shelves made.
