Well the locost has gone and i have an empty garage to fill. As i have no desire or time to build i want a car that's tax'd and tested plus
something that makes me feel 17 again. An example was last year when i borrowed a new VW Golf GT Diesel. I was unaware that it was a GT and was blown
away by how powerful it was. It really made me feel 17 again and i think that's what i want from a car.
With summer just round the corner [HA HA!] an open top jobby would be good but not essential so sensible ideas if you would please!
Budget is £1200

What's your budget Andy - that will have a bearing on our recomendations
IMHO you want something like a Leon Cupra R in Ovni Yellow. Nice one on an 04/05 plate, half leather all the toys and perforomance aplenty. Once you
have it a year and the speed edge has gone then get it re-mapped for a bit more grunt and away you go.
Good quality, affordable performance motoring - and, again IMHO, better looking than a Golf, A3, Civic, Scooby etc.
mk1 golf gti cabro .
it works for me .
get the best spec one you can find electric roof ect .
i play u2 in it and all the 80s music and went to retro fest in it and this year coming im going to this .
im going to the roller disco

But none on their classifieds that low right now.
He he.. Makes for very good reading this thread!! Great Fun!
Ok i have amended the orig post and stated the budget which sadly is only £1200
Fozzie: You will have to ask bob what the book is running at
Mr Whippy: That Diesel Golf i borrowed was bloody quick and it was derestricted because when it came out it was quicker than the GTi petrol car. The
Torque was awesome!
TGR-ECOSSE: Mini..hmmmm All the nice ones are 3-5k upwards and i have had 11 of them so probably better to have a bigger car.
chris mason: HA HA! very funny, i ain't THAT old
thunderace: Golf GTi...... Well my mate may be selling his as he's getting divorced. He uses it only in the sunshine and it sits in his garage
the rest of the time. Not the best example but pretty nice. I'm talking to him about it today.
Surrey Dave: Nice thought on the Sprite but all to dear and i can't fit in your car cos I'm too big!!!!! and it's too dear
What about a horse?
If youre not getting your oats, then you can share his...... and it's open topped into the bargain.
205 1.9 GTI (best fun I've had in a hatchback)
Any 3 series BMW
An old Alfa - might be trouble but lots of fun
Or get PPC magazine, there's always lots being recommended in there

Jasper - How VERY DARE you!
It's STYLIST these days!
donut - 20/12/07 at 01:00 PMJasper, funnily enough i have just watched 'Wheeler Dealers' on SKY and they bought and restored (kind of) a Pug 1.9 GTi, looks a lot of fun.
A friend used to have a 1.9 309 GTi which even 4 up was terrifically fast.
Hmmmmmmmm
Jasper - 20/12/07 at 01:38 PMHave a look on Autotrader, there's a very nice low mileage one not too far from you for £1500 - he might be up for an offer so close to Christmas.
iank - 20/12/07 at 01:56 PMNice example of a marlin with lots of scope for a bigger engine later on. Might get a bit dear since it's still got 3 days to run.
ebay link
Kriss - 20/12/07 at 01:57 PMgotta be a mk1 clio valver of williams surely!
02GF74 - 20/12/07 at 02:26 PMpiccy linky
for £ 650, I bet you couold haggle down.
donut - 20/12/07 at 02:40 PMJasper: That Pug is nice but it's Left hand drive!
iank: Hmmm nice. Doubt he will go for 1200 seeing as it's currently at £1550 and still not met reserve. Is nice though.
02GF74: I had one of them, biggest pile of crap i ever bought!! Never again despite having a V8
Jasper - 20/12/07 at 03:20 PMHow about this one then:
Pug
And there's loads more on Pistonheads....

Last time you had a MX Andy-mate, you did develop a 'quality mince'......
If you do get another MX, any chance of high-lights and a shampoo and set this side of Crimbo? ....... ta..
Fozzie
bob - 20/12/07 at 04:17 PMThe Donut i've been there list
P6 V8 rover
Golf Mk1 cabrio
Andy its just a case of having a good look round, you could probably find a pug for half for half your budget.
Although i reckon its best to stick with the VW sharon since its big enough to take us all to the autosport show in january

The Goodwood 309's are what you want. Much nicer looking and with more toys. Same engine etc as a 1.9 GTi.
I saw one go through ebay a couple of weeks ago mint for 650. And theyr in a nice met green.
MK1 golf GTi??? You might have to up your budget though.

Agreed, Ned sold his for about £500 didn't he?
Just buy summat easy to sell Andy. You'll want another 7 in the garage in 12 months!
Good thing you don't have a bigger garage/barn! You'd keep all the ones you get tired of then!
Cheers,
James
donut - 20/12/07 at 04:43 PMMy car list is much longer than that. Since driving the cars i have owned in no particular order include:
11 minis
3 Mk1 escorts
1 Honda Accord
1 1966 MG Midget
2 MK Indys
1 1957 Ford Anglia
1 Golf GTi Cabrio
1 MX5
1 Rover P6 V8
1 Mk4 Cortina
And various company cars. Probably forgotten about a few!!

[Edited on 20/12/07 by donut]
delboy - 20/12/07 at 06:47 PMBMW E36, tail out on every roundabout in the wet or if you want front wheel drive Alfa romeo 156 well specified, lots of fun, but need lots of care, a little tempremental.
martyn_16v - 20/12/07 at 07:44 PMIf you're going to look at Golf's it's got to be a mk2 16v. If you're not fussed about immaculate paintwork you'll get one for under a grand.
I've had a hankering for a mk2 XR2 for a long while now, i've always regretted selling my last one. They're not exactly outstanding cars in any one area but i've never driven anything that's put as big a smile on my face
phelpsa - 20/12/07 at 08:02 PMI'm 17 and therefore qualified to advise
You need a 205.
Here are mine:
The VW scene is all show nowadays. Not that it's a bad thing
That's right, 40BHP of POWAAA and wheels wide enough to bridge the atlantic
Dangle_kt - 20/12/07 at 09:00 PMIf you really want a LAUGH then you cant beat a supermoto.

There is a good strong trackday/racing crowd if you look in the right places. But yeah, mostly all about the bling. I got a bit bored of walking around shows muttering to myself 'oh look, another VR6 with a polished manifold'. If you do want to feel like a 17y.o. again (or at least mix with them) the No Rice meet at Fleet services isn't a bad one

Is that still on down there? I thought they were chucked out because of people parking in the wrong places!
