zetec camshafts

Hi,
I have a zetec r blacktop 2.0l
I have seen these cams on the bay which seem cheap, but would they fit the blacktop?

Hi Andi

I've heard of Crane Cams and, unsurprisingly, they're more popular in the States than over here.

The things that concern me is that whilst it states that the cams are for 95-02, it doesn't stipulate silvertop or blacktop. More unusual is that they don't state any spec for the cams either??

IMHO, I'd stay clear...

I have bought pistons, rods etc from them for my old 20v Toyota, good service and very cheap. Just be aware you will pay import tax and handling fee for anything posted to uk.

Again, very cheap £220 ish pounds. How much would the import and handling be Any ideas?

The costs may not stop at just the cams, postage and import duty, take into consideration new followers if the cams are not suited to top shim followers , shims , valve springs ,possibly collars and collets and perhaps a gasket set if needed. There isn't a huge amount of info given, might be worth checking out Kent Cams, David Newman cams or Piper cams? Ask for a discount, you never know.

Don't forget on the blacktop you need to price in the shims too, unlike the silvertop which has hydraulic tappets and it's a massive ball ache to do too as I found out when I bent 8 exhaust valves.

Better off with some Newman cams from the UK, might cost bit more but you know what your getting is decent stuff and easy to return if you have a problem

I have fz2002 (kent 2.0 silvertop) cams in my blacktop 2.0 zetec, the only diference i could work out was the lack of a lug to trigger the cam sensor.
The journals were identical in size and design, and the base circle of the cam lobes were also identical, meaning when i fitted them, the valve clearances from the old camshafts were near identical, so i didn't even have to re-shim the followers.
I have done about 20,000 miles on then with no issues.
I don't know if the us silvertop equivalent engine shares dimensions with its eu counterpart, the us blacktops do.
I did notice in my case the kent cams were not much hotter than the original blacktop cams, iirc the blacktop cams are about 9.5mm lift and 256deg duration, the kents about 10.5mm lift and 263 deg duration, those crane ones look to be about the same as standard ones.
That may be due to the standard us cars being very restricted by emissions regs, making a mild eu spec cam into a hot us spec cam.
The specs given for the crane cams dont give at what lift the duration is measured, which skews any comparison further.

Are you 100% sure about that.

Whilst they would physically fit the lobe design for solid lifters and hydraulic lifters is very different and normally ends in premature failure of cams, followers or both.

Why do you think cam manufacturers make different profiles for blacktops and silvertops as did Mr Ford.

Yes, i bought them secondhand on ebay as zetec cams for 20 quid, when i got them and removed the pulleys it was stamped on the end of each camshaft.
I knew they were kents from the pics, and thought if they dont fit someone else will want them anyway.

They were fitted in 2006, last year i replaced the block and got the head ported, there was no measurable wear to the journals or lobes after 20,000miles, and the clearances were still in spec when i stripped down the head for porting.

They were significantly quicker than the standard cams above 4000 rpm, pulling strongly to redline at 7200, the low down torque was reduced below 2000, but still well driveable from idle.
Since the head was ported the power from 4000 to redline is improved, making the car as quick 2up as was previously 1up.


there are some Cat cams on ebay from the usa that would work, eBay Item , they are old model clearance stock (2002) but the specs are very similar to the current 2290317 which are 430 quid.
Its whether the seller will deliver to the uk for a reasonable fee, you might find that there are uk dealers with the same old stock that they might do a deal on.

Be aware that newman cams require undershimmed followers, as their profiles will throw out the top shims from the follower, and that could be expensive.
