Running car in confined space
Huttojb - 18/1/17 at 08:25 PM

Hey all.

I'm running my car in my garage and as you can imagine it's not very safe. Is there a hose I can put around the exhaust and leave hanging out of the garage to remove harmful fumes.

Obviously the exhaust gets pretty hot so what ever it is needs to be heat resistance.

Any ideas would be great.

Jason.

I dont have any pics but I had the same issue with mine, it was also noise related as its bloody loud starting these cars in a single concrete prefab garage!

I managed to acquire a bendy metal tube used for chemical extraction (like soldering ventilation) from work. I hooked this up to some normal PVC pipe (hihg melt temp and gasses will be cool by then) and this goes up to the roof and pokes out of the garage under a high ridge of the corrugated roof.

It works a treat. The biggest problem I have found is getting a good seal between the exhaust and the metal pipe. I have solved this by using an old shirt. Tie it around the tube and exhaust and pull the two together. Any excess material I plug the gaps made between the two different tubes.

What about a length of exhaust flexy tube large enough to slip over the tail pipe and feed this out.

Years ago I had a mark 2 Mr2 I rebuilt.I ran a flexy pipe out under the garage door(proper one borrowed from work) unfortunately the wind direction blew the gases back under the door. I didn't twig. And made myself very very sick!! Be careful guys running engines in garages even with a pipe out the door.

You want this attached to a suitable extraction fan.

google vehicle exhaust extraction hose and set your wallet to stun.

cheap 10 meter long heating duct 4" in diameter should get you far enough away

squeeze the end around your tail pipe with some tie wire.

I did the same with kitchen extractor fan hose the aluminium one but pointed it up outside the garage to stop blowing the fumes in under the door, be aware it's very light and rattled and noisy.

I use the small Clarke extractor fan (200) and the orange bellows ducting. Works wonderfully.

It's also been great for extracting dust when working in confined spaces, the fan has also been up to the job of keeping the engine cool when running the car up (outside).

Some 5in flexible ducting and a cheap bathroom fan at the end will take it all outside.
