Root canal is a piece of p155.

Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, it's just anothet medial procedure where you lie back, close your eyes and think of warm happy places whilst they get on with it.

You won't feel it.
I've had it done twice now and the only sensation was some painless pulling sensations.

Anyone who tells you there is pain involved, (other than the frankly trivial tiny little sensation of the jag going in) has either

a) never had it done.

or

b) has a crap dentist.

Go and get it done.

biggest problem youy will have is if the swelling is an abcess as most dentist wont then give you anathestic until it goes down, i had this a couple of years ago and after 2 days with no sleep i persuaded the dentist to pull without numbing me up, hurt like ££%$££$" for a few seconds but the relief after meant i was on a high for well over an hour before i crashed and slept for 12 hours.

think it will be coming out to be honest. a good dentist will always try to save the tooth first but if the infection has got to the surrounding tissue and jaw bone under the tooth then its never a good sign. has the dentist done a bite wing xray? usually they will show caries under the gum line

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

In the meantime you can get some peroxyl mouthwash from the supermarket, contains a local anasthetic (sp?) and should help to ease the swelling a bit.

I've just had a wisdom removed and a root canal.
Apart from the small scratch from the needle, didn't feel a thing either time.

had root canal recently, ill be honest - it did hurt a few times when the anysthetic hadn't worked all through the three nerves. Hurt like a bitch for a few seconds as the nerve was drilled when live - quick as a flash it got more juice pumped into the nerve and then didnt feel anything else.

having your gob wide open for 45 mins isnt very pleasant though.

You're assuming the nurse is female. I think we need photos to settle the question.

I'd never have another root canal, I would honestly rather have dentures if it came to it. Had two some years back, one was the single most agonising experience of my life and both have now fallen out. Maybe I just had a particularly crap dentist (butcher would be more it in his case), but no one I have spoken to has had a particularly good experience with root canals.
