ECU Help

I received this e mail from a friend earlier.

Can any of you advise please.

Hi Martin...

Looking for someone to give me advice on installing a Ford eec-v ecu into a seven-type with 2.0 Zetec blacktop. Been trying but have hit problems.

Will take any form of help available. (Visit/phone/email)

Mostly down to being drip-fed information on what is a new subject to me, rather than getting a complete picture.

Anyway...

Got an OWL5 eec-v ecu, plus transponder key & antenna all from the same 2.0 manual Zetec blacktop (petrol).

Have wired up for cam posn, crank posn, throttle posn, MAF, lambda, cyl head temp & injectors.

Got the PATS led wired in, & also the antenna (which is around the key barrel & has power & earth). There's a permanent live feed to the ecu at pin 55, plus switched lives at 71 & 97.

Earths are from pins 24, 25, 51, 77 & 103.

With ign off, PATS led flashes once every second or so. Ign on results in 6/7 rapid flashes before it goes off & stays off. However there is never a flashing error code. Obviously the engine will not crank.

To try & isolate problem, all sensors are currently unplugged & fuel pump is disconnected. None of this should matter though as far as I know.

Any ideas?

Ta David

It sounds like a PATS issue to me, and this web page seems to agree.

What your friend needs to do is obtain a copy of the Ford TIS dvd and make sure the PATS is wired in correctly. Never assume what you have done is correct!

Also make sure the PATS antenna ring is close to the key with no metal between the two, if that makes sense.

Also I think the fuel pump has a "fuel pump sense" connection to the ECU so having the pump disconnected might not be helping.

There are some very clued up Ford ECU people on here, who will be along to help soon im sure

Well thats is a kick in the nuts isnt it

I have answered any questions David has sent me. I would not call this drip feeding. Infact ive spent a good few hours looking through my notes to answer his questions and some times this has taken me a few days to look through my notes. As it has this weekend.

David has also posted up the info ive given him for others and got it wrong in the process. eg

Ive spent many an hour talking people through how the Pats works and some have managed it easier than others.

In the circumstances it does seem very rude.

If a decent person doesn't have the knowledge/ability to do something they hold their hands up and admit it rather than trying to blame others.

Tell you what Martin, why dont you suggest to David the radical concept that he should offer Big_Wasa some money to come round and help him debug it.
It sounds like David has soaked up a large amount of time and help like a sponge and isn't especially grateful. Meanwhile he still has the problem and needs a solution so its now time he offered to laid out some cash as he cant expect free advice any more and this would cost him a fair bit of dosh if he took it into a specialist auto electrician.

My sincere apologies to anyone I have offended. That certainly wasn't my intention, and especially not to Warren who has spent a lot of time giving me loads of help.

However I felt I had reached the point where I was becoming a pest to him, and couldn't really justify taking up even more of his time. Hence the reason for seeking help from my local kit car club.

The reference to drip feeding has nothing whatsoever to do with Warren or anybody else on this or any other forum.
It predates my earliest post on this site, and was a reference to other people, mostly local, supposedly knowing "all about ecu's" giving me just odd bits & pieces of information. Some of it was right, some of it was wrong, but it was always incomplete. It was because I could never get a full picture and was tearing my hair out, that I started posting on here once I came across this forum.

So Warren, it most certainly isn't a kick in the nuts - quite the opposite - I'm embarrassed about the amount of your time I'm taking up. Be assured that I've followed your advice to the letter, and you're the one person who always HAS given me the fullest information possible. But when after our last exchange the damn thing still didn't work, I hadn't the heart to bother you yet again. You're also right in that I did post information you sent me, wrongly to another person in an effort to be helpful. I got it wrong, and I hold my hands up to it.

MikeJR - I was not trying to be rude to anyone here. I DO admit my lack of knowledge & ability on this subject, and do not look to blame anyone other than myself.

Not Anumber - Yes - I have soaked up too much time and help - far too much in fact - especially from Warren. But I am nothing if not extremely grateful.

So can you all please accept the contents of this post in the spirit in which it is offered.

Thanks

David
