Pretty sure it's steel remember welding brackets on a Capri axle with the mig!

Don't worry you aren't the first and you won't be the last, Have seen them leak due to cracking aswell

Surprisingly thin steel as well, as I discovered when one of my brackets fractured.
Very easy to mig back on though.
