RE: ST170 Cam timings

Hi All,

I have just recconed and dropped an ST170 engine into my Tiger.

So far so good - in as much as she runs, but with both cams set at TDC I am getting a fair amount of blue flame from the exhaust ports (before I attach the exhaust primaries!) and she sounds like a diesel !

I am assuming that I will have to retard the exhaust cam so that the the exhaust valves open that little bit later in the cycle so I get more bang in the combustion chamber and not out of the exhaust. My question is - does any one have a starting point for this cam adjustment or some wisdom on how to determine the optimum settings i.e. 5 Deg or 10 Deg etc ?

Or any other suggestions... FYI, I have removed the VVT so this is not affecting the set up and these are the standard ST170 cams.

Thanks

Does the st170 not have the same system as the other zetecs, 5mm bar slots into the end of the cams, set tdc on crank marking, put the cam bet on and off you go?

Leave the exhaust cam at factory setting unless you getting to set up and tuned. Inlet cam needs to be advanced about 30Deg.
Done one with VCT delete and it been set up on bike carbs. Now running 194bhp

hi, so by 30 degrees of advance you are talking crank degrees, and therefore 15 advance on the cam ???

Read the suggested thread above and the settings are around 12 degrees of advance on the cam and therefore 24 degrees on the crank...

Just to confirm before I go mad and change it.... thanks

Hi,

just to let you know, I advanced the inlet cam by ~12 deg yesterday and she runs soooo much better.... pulls well through the range with no coughing. I did not red-line her but she pulled well up to around 5,000 - I have only just rebuilt the engine, so still taking care of her...

Could you confirm that you have advanced yours by 15 Deg with even better results - I am a little nervous of over advancing the cam...let me know.

Cheers
