Buying a car in the UK as a foreigner
Dear all,
I would like to inform if the info I gathered is correct.
I'm planning on buying a car in the UK and importing it to Europe.
I've been told that I just buy a car (taxed and mot'ed one) put the v5 in my name, get 3rd party insurance with a UK company and then
drive it home.
But once home... Do I destroy the plates ? How do I delisted it ?

Once you have bought it, the tax is null and void. Any residual tax is refunded to the registered keeper. ( complete months only ).
You also have to tax it along with insuring it to drive it on the uk roads.
Insuring it in this country may be interesting if your not a resident ? But I don’t know that for sure.
New donor engine for your exo ?

Hello,
Best is to go with a trailer.
So , no wories about tax, insurance etc...
If you want to take it by the road, the person you will buy the car will have to send a part of the V5 to Swansea for permanent export.
Ask the seller to wait to the next day to send the document back.
The registration plate stays on the car.
You 'll have to have an insurance on your name.
Once you arrive in Belgium, you 'll have to go to customs with the V5 and the bill.
Then , with the document from the custom you can go to Autokeuring.
Keep the english registration plate on the vehicule untill you have the belgian documents done.
Normally, your insurance can give you a green card on chassis number and englsh palte for a few days , so you can drive to Autpokeuring.
If we talk about a standrad production car, belgian document are easy to get.
if we talk of a kit car, it can be much more complicated...
Gerardo
PS: you can't keep registration and insurance on UK plate if you are not UK resident

The registered keeper can inform the dvla online. So be aware in theory it could show as untaxed before you get to the end of the road.
