rear diff noise help needed please

I have a bad meshing sound coming from either where the propshaft joins the diff or inside the diff...the strange thing is it is a lot worse in 3rd gear when lifting off and without any load....under load the noise is a lot less but still there no probs in 4/5/6th gears but a bit in 2nd....any ideas on what this could be all the diff and prop bolts are tight!!..thanks for any thoughts

I can understand the light load noise, but I would have thought that you would hear a version of it in all gears if it was the diff.
Are you sure its not gearbox noise being transmitted down the propshaft?
Steve.

Definately sounds like gearbox to me. Sometimes very dificult to put your finger on where the actual sound is coming from. I had a wheel bearing go, definately sounded like rear near side, turned out to be front off side. You could try going along in third, and then dropping into neutral, see if the sound is still there, may not be easy to do with a bec. Regards, Ray

diff noise

sounds more gearbox noise but it could be pinion bearings in the diff.if these are worn the pinion would move in and out of mesh with the pinion
