stearing rack restrictor
two of the fails on my SVA were due to the stearing lock being to great.
what do others do to restrict the lock.
the tester said he had seen jubalee clips but he would never suggest that.
is there a device that fixes to the rack and reduces the lock?
could springs be used? if so what size and type?
comments welcome

Clutch springs are the usual bodge....
Otherwise jubilee clips...
both sit over the rod (but under the gaitor so hidden out of sight)
Springs also have the advantage of giving some self-centering on full lock... or did you pass that bit okay?
Not sure on the ID.... prob depends on the rack used...
Let me know if you need me to rummage in my box of bits- not sure if my old ST1100 springs would be big enough...

I used Pinto valve springs in my rack which worked a treat.

land rover valve springs fit. I have one on each side but some people reckon two each side is better as it will reduce lock more and give you some
self centering. about 52p each off ebay.

Mine are Pinto valve springs. They fit perfectly on the Sierra rack.

Measure and machine some aluminium spacers (or get someone to machine some for you) to fit over the rack and limit the amount of lock. That way you
can get maximum turn whilst preventing anything from fouling.

If someone can give me some dimensions, I should be able to knock them out quite easily - I have the technology!

I just used a 10mm slice of a 32mm alloy tube. Slit it so you can slide over the rack and replace the boot.

Springs on The Rack ???
I have never heard of springs on the rack and I would not fit them to my car. The way to restrict the lock is to have tubular spacers. I like these to
be a good fit and attached to the rack with either 638 Loctite or grub screw. Also ensure they can not jam in the rack housing.
Here are some reasons that I would not fit springs:
Steering is important feedback as to what the tyres are doing in regards to grip. Springs will confuse this. In my experience the less friction in all
the steering gear the better the feedback.
Dynamic self centering should be adequate for driving.
I suppose if the springs help you pass the SVA then they are a good idea but it will demonstrate just what a farce the SVA is in some areas.
